I have watched a lot of films lately so had taken a little break as I had done a bit of a movie overdose. However, today I was ready to get back to viewing some more and the title that stood out on my shelf this time was 'Night At The Museum'. I remember seeing the trailer a while back and although it showed Ben Stiller who I am a fan of as he is usually funny, I wasn't sure exactly how from what shown on the trailer this could develop into a plot. I missed it in the cinema but doubt I'd have paid anyway so saw the DVD once and decided to buy it as curiosity had gotten the better of me. Like I said before with Ben Stiller starring I knew it had to be a comedy so at least I knew one thing, that it involved little concentration and would have no deep plot and I was glad of that.
This film is based on a book of the same title by Milan Trenc. Larry Daley is unemployed and divorced he
cannot seem to keep a job and he is also a father. He wants to get a job to get back in his son Nick's good books as he seems to want to be more like his step-father (Paul Rudd). He finally goes to an agency and they give him an interview it is at the Museum of Natural History and he soon finds out the position is to be a night guard. He is quickly shown around by the previous guards after he gets the job and they give him the strange advice to not let anything in or out of the museum but they don't explain why they have said this, Larry soon finds out why. After a few hours of entertaining himself talking on the mic he soon noticed the T-Rex missing and next thing he knows he is being chased by the skeleton down the corridor.
Before he knows it more things are coming to life a stone head, civil war statues, cowboys, Egyptians and Romans. The reasoning behind everything coming to life is soon made clear by the statue of Theodore Roosevelt who explains that ever since an Egyptian tablet was brought to the museum everything has come to life every night ever since. The exhibits can't leave the museum because if sun hits them they will turn to dust hence the previous warning to not let anything in or out. Larry is a bit scared and is almost ready to leave his job but then he decides to read history books and learn about these people.
Of course no one believes Larry about the exhibits coming to life because they think it seems far fetched. The plot does develop though much to my surprise, it turns out the previous night guards steal the Egyptian tablet and the films then turns into a plot about them regaining the tablet and so it goes on from this point.
The film was a lot better than I'd expected it to be and it actually did pass quite quickly even though there wasn't much change of scenery. It's quite a funny film and although not hilarious there are a few parts which made me laugh. It's a film which makes you think about history and what would happen if these people were released in present day. It is also quite interesting but of course would never happen.
Ben Stiller was ok in this film but I have definitely seen him do other roles better. He is a comedy man and he was good for the part but it didn't put his humour to its best here and I felt a bit disappointed in that sense. He was good in the role though and could be serious at times and seem convincing as well as being funny without it being too obvious
Other people in this film were Ricky Gervais who made an appearance as the museum director, he didn't do too much acting he was just an annoyed manager but nonetheless he was ok. Owen Wilson was in this, another of Ben Stiller's comedy friends and he played the cowboy but was quite funny even if miniature sizes and he fit the part quite well. Dick Van Dyke was also in the film as one of the previous night guards and was quite good too. Robin Williams of course played Theodore and was good in the part it was different for him but he did it good.
Overall, it was quite a funny film, not the funniest I've ever seen but it did need to be serious at times too. It passed quite quickly and although quite predictable it was still entertaining and at no point was I bored and wanting to skip it to the end.
The film can be purchased at Play.com for £5.99 with free delivery. It lasts approximately 108 minutes and is a PG certificate. The official website is at www.nightatthemuseum.com/

Great review. I really didn't enjoy this film and gave up before the end. I thought Ricky Gervais was really rubbish as well.

I agree wholeheartedly with your findings on this one - not Ben Stiller's best effort, it left me feeling as though the whole film should have been much better - an unfulfilled promise. Richard.

Advantages: Good actors, something for all the family, fun storyline Disadvantages: not exactly entirely factually correct (regarding the exhibits, so I hear)
