Night at the Museum starring Ben stiller in my opinion is the family film of 2007. Who knows maybe they will release toy story 3 or a second monsters inc. but after watching this movie no comedy released this year comes close to this one. It is fast pacing and gets right to point, all the way through you are entertained and each and every character is a great deal more than adequate.
Synopsis! The movie starts off clearly portraying the appalling fatherhood of Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) towards his young son Nick (Jake Cherry). The reason for this is his constant passion for inventions that either don’t work or are already released and better. One day in the hot New York sun Larry’s ex-wife (Kim Raver) insists that until Larry gets a decent job their Son Nick is not allowed to stay with him. This finally pushes Larry into going to the job centre and finding work that is suitable for him. So when the woman at the centre finds him a job at the National History Museum he decides to give it a go. He is HIRED! But that’s not the good part, the good part is what happens in the museum and after being given instructions, keys and flash light by Cecil (Dick Van Dyke) he sits and awaits the most amazing piece of historic value known to America (LIFE.)
After the daylight vanishes every part of the museum awakens and Larry is met with some of the most famous faces in history, Teddy Roosevelt (Williams), Jedidiah (Wilson), Ahkmenrah (Malek), Christopher Columbus (Favino) and a dinosaur named Rexy. After facing the wildness of the exhausting animals and faces of the past Larry decides he cannot work in these conditions if it kills him but then the remembrance of his son baffles his mind into staying until he finds a better job. And what happens next….watch it and find out!!!
Characters!
Ben stiller
plays Larry Daley, a bad father with an absent business life. Nothing in his life goes right and even his ex-wife and son are starting to doubt his enthusiasm to life in general. Larry is the felt for character that brings the tears into your eyes as his life gradually starts to take place job wise and family wise. Stiller I must admit is not a favourite actor in my books but I do not think anyone could have played the part of Larry any better than him. His comedic background of movies such as; meet the fockers and zoolander failed as award winning films, but in due time his performance in light-hearted comedies with tear jerking moments is going to take the place of Tom Hanks if he continues to pick the scripts like Night at the Museum.
Robin Williams plays the wild yet wise Teddy Roosevelt and yet again brings comedy, sighing moments and exceptionally serious flashes of genius. Robin Williams has an amazing background in movies the vary from, Flubber (A classic) and Mrs. Doubtfire (an outstanding family movie), all of these films portray an amazing guy and a fantastic family man. His roles in family films always fit his image, humour and age he never disappoints an audience and this movie is no acception.
Dick Van Dyke plays the mysterious yet friendly Cecil. Who hands the instructions to Larry and helps in no other way than persuading him to stay. Van Dyke is one of the most famous movies and even if you did not know him by name you will definitely know him by face and if I had to pick my favourite performance of his it would have to be in Chitty chitty bang bang however his act as Cecil come close second. Cecil is also a guy that never lets an audience down and the fact of old age has had absolutely no impression on his acting. He is still a great performer.
Owen Wilson plays Jedidiah the cowboy and although he was never credited for his role in the movie in my opinion he and Octavius (Steve Coogan) were the show stealers (sorry stiller). In his past movies I have never been a big fan of Owen Wilson as he comes across as annoying but in this movie he is anything but. He and Octavius are in rival villages (or should I say windows) and they can do nothing but fight until Larry comes along and shows them they don’t have to fight, they can be friends. Owen is definitely the comedian of the movie.
Other characters range from Rex the dinosaur to Rebecca, Larry’s fancy woman. There are also Nick the son who is not in much of the film but he gets the tear jerking moment for father son issues. Chris Columbus is one of the background characters and he only speaks French but he somehow understands English. There is also Sakajawea an Indian woman whom Teddy R, has is eye on, and Rebecca wants to meet to be able to finish her book.
Overall these characters all make the movie what it is… AMAZING!!!!!
The Second DVD!
Both of the DVD options are bursting with energetic sound and image however the second one has insight into the mind of exceptional director Shawn Levy and Outstanding writers; Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon.
The second disc consists of fourteen features the first of which is;
Deleted Scenes with optional commentary if wanted. This is not of importance but is fun to watch if bored.
The second feature is an alternative opening scene which is good but in my opinion the current opening scene is better, however this is worth watching to make your own decision.
The next one is the hilarious Blooper Reel exposing the goofs and errors of a fantastic cast of an outstanding movie.
The fourth feature is Directing 101 which is hosted by Shawn Levy and this feature give more in-depth sightings into the world according to Levy.
The fifth feature is bringing the museum to life which is all about how the museum is changed with the special affects and images of the famous faces of the past.
The next feature is called Acting to Nothing because it is about how some of the cast members had to act to thin air for characters such as; Rexy. It is quite funny to see Ben stiller play games with nothing as it gives the impression that he is cracking up quite seriously. Teehee
The seventh feature named Monkey business encloses information and interviews from Monkey trainers Mike Alexander and Tom Gunderson. This feature only lasts for about 5 minutes and is quite entertaining the feature ends with ‘Comedy centrals reel comedy; night at the museum’ another small feature.
The eighth feature is ‘security office’ which also holds interviews but from Claude Pare (producer/ designer) for the section ‘Building the Museum.
The next section holds 5 minutes feature, ‘historical threads; costumes of night at the Museum,’ which holds interviews from all of the designers Claude Pare inclusive.
And then comes the storyboard part which is pretty much self-explanatory but to explain a little… it is the comparison of the beginning storyboard to the present day movie which is quite a difference.
Next there is the stage coach section which begins with the Making of Night at the museum and adds through out, interviews with cast member Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais and Mickey Rooney.
The nest section is interviews with Fox channel guys, Ellen m. Somers and Don Zimmerman.
And finally the last section is Life after film school which is also pretty self-explanatory.
Each of the features are equally as fun and entertaining but some are more fun than other and most of them consist of interviews and can be quite laborious in places.
Quotes;
Larry: You're an old man, I don't want to fight you. [Gus punches Larry in the face]
Jedediah: I don't want to be manhandled! Larry: No! I will manhandle you Jedadiah! Whats your problem? Why can't you all just get along? Jedediah: We're men, we fight okay? Thats what we do! Octavius: Its kinda how we pass the time.
Easter Island Head: Hey! Dum-dum! Larry: Yes? Easter Island Head: You give me gum-gum! Larry: I give you gum-gum? Easter Island Head: You new Dum-dum. You give me gum-gum. Larry: Gee, okay, you know what? I have no gum-gum. Sorry. And my name isn't Dum-dum. My name's Larry. Easter Island Head: No, your name Dum-dum. [People screaming] Easter Island Head: Oh, you in trouble, Dum-dum. You'd better run-run. From Attila the Hun-hun. [Larry runs as Attila and his gang are chasing him] Easter Island Head: See you later, Dum-dum!
Overall opinion!
My overall opinion is 10 out of 10 I really think this is the greatest family movie since toy story 1 and 2 and I absolutely without hesitation recommend buying the two disc special you won’t be disappointed no matter what your genre is and it age is not an issue as there is humour for both adults and children.
