Plot: Larry (Stiller) is a guy down on his luck. Moving from job to job and regularly getting evicted his ex wife and son are urging him to settle down with a steady job.
After several unsuccesful attempts as an inventor he decides to go to the job centre, where he gets pointed in the direction of the Museum of Natural History.
He takes the job of night security man, replacing three old timers (headed up by Van Dyke) who wish him luck and give him a list of instructions.
The only problem is that after sunset everything in the museum comes to life. This includes a T-Rex skeleton, Ghengis Khan who is intent on ripping people limb from limb and an African exhibition with lions and a very naughty monkey called Dexter.
As Larry tries to keep everything in the Museum from escaping or killing each other - Steve Coogans Roman Centurian and Owen Wilsons cowboy are a prime example - he learns that an Egyptian tablet is responsible for the magical events.
One night, trying to impress his son, he waits for the museum to come to life - only it doesn't. He goes to check the tablet and realises it has been stolen. Can he get it back and save the museum, before the neurotic museum directir (Gervais) realises what is going on?
Overview: I only went to see this at the cinema because my car went in for a service and I had a few hours to kill in the afternoon. Even though I am a fan of Stiller I wasn't expecting very much. I thought "Christmas film for kids" so will be full of childish gags, but I was pleasantly suprised.
The jokes are childish at times but there are some laugh out loud moments and a nod to other more adult genres from time to time. For me the film is worth watching alone for the banter between Wilson and Coogan as warring miniature models.
I am amazed that so many great comedy actors signed up for this film - the script is ok and it doesn't exactly scream "blockbuster," but the cast is pretty amazing. Robin Williams stars as the 'fatherly advice' spouting Theodore Roosevelt, and puts in a standard of performance you would expect.
The baddies of old security guards (headed by Dick van Dyke) aren't that convincing - and I thought Mickey Rooney's character was just awful and rather pointless.
Although the film has a predictably heart warming finale it is worth renting for the kids, or like me have a couple of hours to spare. You will finish watching it with a grin on your face.
The special effects are a bit hit and miss - the dinosaur is very good but some of the animals aren't amazing.
The DVD extras are pretty good too. The making of featurettes are interesting, and the blooper real is probably as funny as the film. You get a whole second DVD full of extras to keep you occupied.
The cover of the DVD is also worth note. It kept me impressed for 30 seconds anyway - a hologram. One side is an empty museum, the other filled with all the inhabitants of the museum.
Overall I would give this film 6/10
