An Ice Cube-directed film was always going to be a good excuse for a storming soundtrack. ... more
For the follow-up to his cult classic Friday, it was an absolute necessity. So the biggest names in rap and R&B--The Wu-Tang Clan, Eminem, Krayzie Bone, Aaliyah (with her supremely soulful "I Don't Wanna") and the director himself (brandishing the ferocious statement of intent "You Can Do It")--have turned out in force, supplying career-defining tunes, to make Next Friday more than a match for its predecessor. Normally such a list, plus Wyclef Jean's funk jam "Low Income" and Pharoahe Monch's sublime "Livin It Up" (up there with Blackstreet's "No Diggity" as a classic) would be enough to ensure a stunning musical accompaniment to any movie. But Ice Cube's used Next Friday as an excuse, as if one were needed, to re-form the mighty NWA, with Snoop Dogg taking the mic for the late Easy E. And while "Chin Check", their first track in a decade, may not be their finest outing, it comes a pretty hard-hitting second and guarantees this as the hip-hop collection of the year. --Dan Gennoe

Looking through my brothers DVD collection, I wasn't expecting anything to jump out at me for a film that I must review, and to be honest nothing did. What I did spot however was a film that could perhaps be worth waiting, called 'Next Friday'. It seemed like quite an odd film to be in my brothers collection, as from the front of the DVD cover you immediately get the feeling that it is quite an 'urban' film - and my brother is anything but. Next Friday is a 2000 release, the second film in the 'Friday' trilogy, also having a follow-up by the name of 'Friday After Next'. Now I've never seen the first or third, so maybe there was some character development in the first that made this film seem really good, but I don't think Next Friday is going to be able to stand on its own two feet.
Famous rapper, Ice Cube, played a hand in writing the movie as well as taking on the lead role in the film of Craig Jones. Craig is in trouble as his sworn enemy Debo (Tommy Lister) has escaped from prison along with Tyrone (Sticky Fingaz). This prompts Craig to change neighbourhoods so that he can live with his lottery winner uncle and cousin. After a chaotic Friday night the previous week, it's now Friday again and things are set to be even more crazy. To open the movie we are shown Craig sitting on the toilet as he rolls some drugs up for his own personal consumption, meaning his father can't get into the bathroom. Craig's daddy is Willie Jones (John Witherspoon) and he's probably one of the best actors out of the lot, although there wasn't much competition. One of the first scenes in the movie is us seeing their pet dog go to the toilet in their front garden, and then Willie strangely falls straight over on his ass and into the poop. You spend most of the movie wondering if he will ever clean it off him, but surely toilet jokes stopped being funny along time ago.
The tagline for the movie is 'The suburbs make the hood look good!' and this is based on the fact that Craig's move from his poor, ghetto house to a huge suburb mansion seems to make his life even more crazy. Craig's cousin is Day-Day (Mike Epps) and when these pair first start talking to each other you're probably thinking it's going to be impossible to follow what they're talking about in this movie, but their different lingo becomes second nature fairly quickly. I guess it depends on who you are. Uncle Elroy is played by Don Curry, and with all his money his house can become like a drugged up version of the Playboy mansion. Willie and Elroy do not get along, and this is based off mostly jealously, however there is no point in time that you care about this storyline because of the small amount of time and how poorly written it is. Elroy's wife had a heart attack when she realised she had won the lottery.
In fact, you don't care about anything that is happening in the movie. Whether it be the storyline of Debo coming to kill Craig, or the main storyline. And what is the main storyline you ask? Well it's a mixture of the feud the Jones' have with the Mexican across the cul-de-sac and the fact that Elroy's mansion is going to be repossessed if he doesn't find the money to pay his taxes. For the sake of a love storyline there is Craig falling for the Mexican gang's little sister, and Day-Day has landed himself in a spot of bother himself.. this is probably the only funny thing about the movie, where some girl who was already pregnant is claiming Day-Day is the father of her baby. Day-Day has an order in place so that she can't come near him, however it's his posh BMW that always seems to feel the force of what is going wrong in his life.
Other characters include the Mexican gang's crazy little dog, Chico. Elroy's sex interest of the movie, Suga (Kym Whitley), who really has a thing for Craig. Mrs Ho-Kym (Amy Hill) the old Chinese woman who is intouch with her gangsta side. Finally I will mention the guy who came to deliver the tax notice, as he offered a bit of a laugh, he was played by Michael Rapaport.. some may recognise him for being in a relationship with Pheboe in an earlier series of 'Friends'.
The certificate for the movie is a 15, and I have to think that this is based off the swearing and drug useage. Whilst there are teases of nudity and sex, you never actually see anything except a condom and a shelf full of dildos. The rating does just about fit.. but who needs to know about the certificate? This film is just awful to be true, and shouldn't really be seen by anyone. Running for 94 minutes doesn't make it the longest film in the world, but it does make it one of the most pointless ones. With a stronger storyline and more character development this could have had a shot in the dark at being a success, in my mind though it is one of the worst films I have ever seen.
Advantages: Extremely funny, easy watching movie Disadvantages: Maybe not quite as good as the first Friday
Next Friday is a ligthearted, easy watching movie that is bound to have you smiling from start to finish. If you liked the first Friday then you'll enjoy Next Friday too, though as i said in the disadvantages it may not be quite as good as the first one, but that's only my personal opinion!!!
Chris Tucker isn't in this film (Smokey) which is a real shame but there are plenty of new characters to replace him, including Mike Epps who plays the character ... ...and his cousin Dey Dey. Next door to his Uncle and cousin live a mexican gang with a temperamental pit bull for a pet (need i say more?!!!)
From that point on, things go steadiy downhill for Craig. He finds out that his uncle Elroy has squandered all his money and his mansion is going to be repossessed unless they come up with the money. When he learns that the Mexicans next door have stashes of drug money they (Craig and DeyDey) decide to break ...

That's where the fun starts without giving too much away (you really have to see this film) Craig finds out that his uncle Elroy has squandered all his money and his mansion is going to be repossessed unless they come up with the Cash When he learns that the Mexicans next door have stashes of drug money they decide ... ...party and get caught.
Think that's bad enough before all this Craig manages to lose Day Days job by getting stoned at work and on the way to the bathroom gets mistaken for a robber by the owner PINKY and batters him in self defence. Craig also falls in love with Jokers little sister (who by the way is soooooo HOT) which causes a bit of tension.

Advantages: A hilarious DVD featuring top rap star Ice cube and commedian Mike Epps laughing nonstop Disadvantages: To my disappointment there was no more of these funny films created
A fantastic film from a series of 3 created by Cube vision featuring the legendery Ice cube and the extremely funny Mike Epps. Friday After Next is the last from the series and is the third and final film. It is a fantastic movie which will constantly make you laugh. The film is based on the West Coast and is more like a gangster film with extremely funny parts. The features included in the DVD are also very good ranging from Actor commentary to Music Videos and Deleted scenes. I believe the whole series of the Friday productions should be a must have. Briliant story lines with some fantastic actors with great potential. It also brings to mind of what it would be like to live out on the West Coast, an 8/10 for me. ...
Advantages: Funny, great characters & wickid soundtrack Disadvantages: misleading extra menu
Being a hip-hop fan I really dont know why I havn't yet seen or brought the original Friday, especially as it only costs £7.99 on most online stores. With the latest film in the series being currently released in the US, I thourt I would take time out to review this great film.
So this review is coming from a person who only ownes this film 'nextFriday'. I have it on DVD and it cost around £18 at the time (steap I know) but dont worry now it only costs around £8 (great i spent £10 more) but I dont mind paying the extra for a great film.
THE FILM ITSELF:
Okay, the film is about Craig Jones (Ice Cube), who I believe in the first film beat up his enemy Debo, well Debo has just been released from prison and is after Craig, so his farther decides to move him from the projects to the suberbs with his uncle and cousin.
While Debo is ...

DVD Description
Set two years after the events in FRIDAY, NEXT FRIDAY follows a day in the life of protagonist Craig (Ice Cube), who must flee Los Angeles after neighborhood bully Debo breaks out of prison, vowing to beat him to a pulp. Craig escapes to his uncle Elroy's house in Rancho Cucamonga, only to discover that life in the suburbs is even more screwed up than in the ghetto. His uncle is into S&M; his aunt is a nymphomaniac; the neighbors are a bunch of gangsters; and his cousin is chased by a former girlfriend and a thuggish woman named Baby D. The fourth film produced by Ice Cube, NEXT FRIDAY is, like its predecessor, a buddy film pairing straight man Ice Cube with fresh comedic talent Mike Epps. Helmed by first-time director Steve Carr, who is known for making stylish videos for top rap acts, the film sends up raunchy life in suburbia from an African American perspective. The soundtrack is liberally sprinkled with thumping hip-hop tracks, including "Chin Check," the first new song from the rap group NWA in many years.
