The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year Concert, which has taken place annually since 1941, is ... more
possibly the most famous musical event in the world. Broadcast live from Vienna's Musikverein to dozens of countries, the concert has a worldwide audience in excess of 50 million people. Equally impressive is the time it has taken for Deutsche Grammophon to produce this two-CD live recording--just 27 days. The 2003 concert, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, was the usual Straussfest, with favourites such as The Blue Danube, the Emperor Waltz and the Radetzky March. For the first time, music by Brahms (his Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6) and Weber (Berlioz's orchestration of Invitation to the Dance) were on the programme; they fit in perfectly. The New Year Concert is always a joyous occasion, conveyed here not only by the energetic and poised performances from the Vienna Phil (clearly no hangovers from the previous night's celebrations!) but also by the receptive audience whose cheers and applause can be heard throughout. Also included is Harnoncourt's short address--delivered in German but with no English translation given. --Rebecca Agnew

Advantages: a funny old year Disadvantages: my dreams have become true
I look back on 2003 and think crikey what a busy year we have had in one way or another, here is my diary of what has happened in our family since January 2003.
January
------------
Was still building a home in our concrete council flat and was still reeling at the fact that we had been made homeless a few months before and reflecting on how we had come to this position. All I dreamt of was owning my own house but this would never be a possibility as house prices were soaring and the basic terrace was well over £60k. We started the year with a decorated flat in a block of twelve 3 stories high with noisy neighbours and a small garden. I was out of work due to my disability.
February
------------
We decided not to carpet the flat and to save like hell for a house, the more money we spent in here the next person would benefit ...
Advantages: Visual + Audio Showcase of a live session Disadvantages: Could of been more of the show on the 2nd DVD
What an excellent DVD.
Comes in 2 DVD edition, but the 2nd DVD is more the 'Making of' type of thing that you generally get in a 2 DVD set.
The first DVD - is the actual show that went on in Gelredome Arnhem on 29/30th October 2004.
25,000 tickets were sold for this show, one of the largest in the world to attend to watch / listen to just 1 single DJ.
The actual event itself lasted for approx 8 hours, with a cut down 200 mins on the first DVD of the actual show.
If you like DJ Tiesto, then I highly recommend getting this DVD, especially if you have your DVD player linked to your AV Receiver / Surround Sound System, will sound truley amazing.
Go and get yourself a copy from your local store. ...
Advantages: Great sampler, excellent recording. Disadvantages: Not quite as memorable as being there in person.
The ViennaNewYear's Concert is a tradition somewhat akin to the "Last Night of the Proms" apart from the fact that obviously it is Austrian music that is played, and there is not the same atmosphere. The concert has happened annually since 1939, although originally it used to take place on NewYear's Eve rather than NewYear's Day, because a poor attendance was feared, after the traditional Austrian "Silvester" revelry.
One other difference is that the NewYear's Concert is even more exclusive than the Last Night of the Proms, as you have to apply for tickets two yearsin advance, and they are exceptionally pricey. Indeed applications for the 2003concert closed on 2nd January this year. It is an event to be seen at, and is also a musical highlight of the Vienna music scene. Each year since 1987, when the late Herbert von Karajan ...
Includes a number of works from the Strauss' that have never been included in any of the New Year's concerts before. Conductor is Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

DVD Description
Every New Year, the highlight in the classical music world is the annual concert given by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2003, the honour of conducting this special concert was handed to Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who admits that he was touched to receive this special invitation. Harnoncourt chose to focus the night's music on the Strausses--both Johann Sr. and Johann Jr., as well as Josef--and chose pieces that had not been heard at any of the previous New Year's concerts. Also included were Brahms' Hungarian Dances and Weber's Invitation to the Dance.
