    Advantages Advantages Connery is back!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Its a remake of Thunderball.

It was a glorious time 1983, in fact 1983 was a momentous year in cinema for a Bond fan, as not one but two Bond films were released; Octopussy with Roger Moore and Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery. I went twice to see Bond! The media labelled it as the Battle of the Bonds and this meant straight away that there was going to be a winner and loser, with Connery's entry being the unofficial rival meant that the odds were very much stacked against him. With Albert R Broccoli still producing the official franchise with Moore in the lead as 007, it came as some surprise that a rival company ... more

Advantages Advantages Sean Connery still has a fountain of charisma ; Great Villain ; A much better Felix Leighter than the original ; Much more humour than usual Connery offerings

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sean Connery looks dated ; A tired 80's re-make of the classic Thunderball film ; Farfetched plot ; Poor Bond girls ; Practically every notable element of the Bond saga is absent

The one that didn't make the official James Bond collection, yes that would be a rather more apt label, rather than a re-make of the highest grossing Bond film. Never Say Never Again was in fact Sean Connery's seventh and final Bond film which equaled the record of Roger Moore. Funnily enough the title couldn't be more apt, after the poor box office showing of Diamonds Are Forever and his age, Sean Connery did say when the question was put to him, will he play the Bond role again, 'Never Again' being his reply. It seems bitterly ironic that in 1983 it was released at almost the same time as ... more

Advantages Advantages The return of John Barry with a sumptuous score

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Infantile rubbish

...this one begins, apparently. Not since the mid 60s has Bond seemed so popular. Even the tepid and tedious 'Die Another Day' cleaned up at the box office where previously audiences would have voted with their feet at anything below Bond par. It seems timely then to have a quick refresher course on the 007 franchise and its release on DVD. The discs will get one further outing in November 2003 before being withdrawn until 2005 with all new 5.1/DTS soundtracks, and maybe even some updated extras. Why start with 1979's 'Moonraker'? Well, at least this way you get the rot out of the way to begin ... more

Sometimes things sound really good on paper. Sometimes the very idea of something just appeals. So when the Sean Connery opts to return to his career making role, what Bond fan could not fail to get excited? Added to the fact that it based on the same Fleming novel as Thunderball and we should have a belter of a film. The dastardly SPECTRE have managed to hijack two atomic warheads. The authorities don't know how but they certainly know why: Money. In return for not destroying oil production, SPECTRE demands payment of 25% of each countries oil budget. The clock is running and there's only one ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun to watch, despite the absurdity of it all. At last, we have Dolby 5.1 coding.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lots of extras, but far less than the other Bond discs!

Here I am with another review from the Bond-fans dream come true - remastered DVD versions of the Bond series. And this time it's the turn of Moonraker, placing us firmly in the middle of Moore's overlong reign as the saviour of Britain. The Roger Moore Bonds could be fitted into one of two camps: they were either good, solid action movies, with a great plot, spectacular stunts and a subtle alluring mix of humour and style. Examples of this would include The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only and Live and Let Die. Or they were ridiculous. Way over the top humour, Moore raising his eyebrows ... more
