My husband and I have recently subscribed to Sky movies which entitle us to watch some more channels. We are both film addicts and love to watch new and old films. We love films of any genre and even those with subtitles. We thought it would work out cheaper subscribing to sky movies rather than hiring video's every night.
Flicking through the channels and trying to find a good film I came across Never Been Kissed. As we usually do we looked it up on Ciao and found out that it looked to be our type of film. Plus the fact I could turn round to my husband and say "Never Been Kissed" at which we both looked at each other and laughed. It's like the joke where you say you're still a virgin when you know that's not true.
I'm going to try and not give too many spoilers away in my last film review I gave too many away and could have potentially spoilt the film. There will still be references to the film which I took note of whilst watching the film. Some of the references to the film will include favourite moments or most memorable moments. There will also be those times when I found it very funny.
Firstly I would like to discuss in more depth the films title "Never Been Kissed" So who invented kissing? Anthropologists think kissing's origins are to be found in primitive times when mothers chewed food and transferred it directly from their mouths to their babies' mouths, a method of preparing baby food that is
still practiced in some cultures today.
Kissing is obviously a very important part of life. Parents kiss their children, people greet strangers with a kiss on the cheek, Catholics give the "kiss of peace," Jews kiss the Torah and nervous flyers kiss the ground. Kissing is an important part of our every day society. Kissing is a valuable body language that can mean many different things to many different people given the circumstances at the time of the kiss.
Going back to the film if you have never been kissed before you will feel ultimately that you are missing out on something. Something very good. This is a fun loving film with Drew Barrymore. At first it's a bit cheesy you sit there on your comfy settee wondering do I really want to watch this. Is anything going to happen? When's it going to start?
It starts with obvious cheesy comedy. You know the quick fire kind of comedy and some pretty poor lines that made me think the film was going to be cruddy. My husband and I have a half an hour rule though. If the film is no good in half an hour then we will turn it over and watch something else. Well it was fortunate that this film did live beyond the half an hour, but if we had not waited half an hour we may well have turned the channel over.
Jose Geller an unlikely student journalist gets chosen to be an undercover journalist for her first major journalist job. Jose has strived to be good enough to be given a chance where she could prove herself as a journalist. She feels that this is her chance to shine. Despite being given this chance she soon starts having second thoughts. The job she has been given involves her going back to school and pretending to be 17 again. When in real fact Jose is 24 years old. The problem of her going back to school is the fact she used to be a real nerd. The kind of person you would probably call a dumb blonde.
There were many times during the film I felt badly for Jose. It was definitely squirmy moments that made me enjoy the film more. Drew Barrymore really made Jose into a strong character. Her acting skills were fantastic and it was obvious to me she had done her character research. The viewer could believe in her character even if she was over the top at times. Every time Jose speaks she portrays a character geeky and embarrassing. Jose does and says embarrassing things. It is a brilliantly fun film where you can enjoy being a kid again.
Warning!
Do not watch this film if you take life too seriously. You will not enjoy this film if you cannot laugh at life. This film is not to be taken seriously. It is a laugh a minute film with extreme humour bordering on the ridiculous.
As Jose settles into her new school life she isn't attracted to the popular people, but to the nerds. Jose starts to confuse her new 17 year old self with her old self and this is very funny to watch. You can see Jose wondering how she should act towards certain people. The impossible is asked and the obvious usually happens this makes the film have a comedy style that is sometimes embarrassing to watch. The film takes you back to your school days and how desperate people were to be popular and fit in. Then there were the groups who were not popular and were often classified by others as nerds.
As the film progresses it gets even funnier. Just as you think Jose cannot get even more embarrassing she does. The whole set up is because Jose needs to get stories for the newspaper. I found watching the film was stress relieving because it was so funny and made me laugh so much.
This is a good film to watch with a loved one or friends. The film is all about friendships and relationships and has some strong moral values running through the film. It reminded me a bit of "Big" or "15 going on 30" because it's a role reversal plot.
One of the funniest moments for me was when the class was supposed to be learning about sex education and they were putting condoms on banana's and Jose accidentally flicked the condom in the teachers face.
You really get involved in the film and it takes the viewer into the world of the film. There is some good music. Towards the end of the film there are more serious scenes though all the way through mainly there has been a lot of laughter. It is a very stylish film that has been well made and well directed. It teaches you to find who you are and not what you want to be.
I found it to be very beautifully written in a way that was very poignant. It takes you on a path to self discovery and teaches you about the chapters we go through in life. There is love, romance, baseball and prom night. All in all a very good story that started a bit cheesy and ended wonderfully. A definite must watch. If you can move past the first scenes then you will fall in love with this film. I know that I did.

Advantages: Great fun, insightful, genuinely touching and often hilarious - and Drew Barrymore! :-) Disadvantages: Not many, unless you don't like romantic comedies.
