who witnessed or even participated in Hitler's reign, this eight part 1997 documentary brought fresh light to bear on the rise and fall of The Third Reich. Inevitably, the episode dealing with the Holocaust immobilises the viewer in its harrowing detail and a further blow against that rump of humanity who refuse to believe the genocide ever occurred. Yet of great interest also is the depiction of the nature of Hitler's dictatorship. He was, it seems, not a driven, workaholic ideologue but a lazy man who, having set his ideas in motion was content to let his subordinates do all the administrative work, fighting for his favour. The series also featured interviews with unrepentant Nazis. There's a telling moment in which an interviewer confronts an elderly woman with a letter of complaint to the Nazi authorities about a supposedly "subversive" neighbour, bearing her signature. The letter sent the hapless neighbour to her death. At first the woman denies knowledge of the incident, then, when faced with the evidence, glibly wonders why anyone should still bother about events that occurred so long ago. This series shows us exactly why. --David Stubbs

...I have to say that before I start ranting, I have nothing against Hollywood in general. I have even found the recent Anti-English history twisting rather amusing. But when Hollywood has to bare faced audacity to create a film that completely re-writes a British war story with America as the heroes, I get mad. I know that the film is supposed to be fictional. But it is loosely based on a true British war story. The Americans hadn't even offered to help Britain at the period during which the film is set. GET IT RIGHT. I believe the last people who tried to blatantly re-write history in this way, were the Nazis, not in making films but burning books, a much less effective method. The disturbing fact is that children will grow up and believe this stuff. I heard recently that "The Great Escape", a true story about a daring escape of European...

Advantages: Great action, tension, acting and plot Disadvantages: none
...History is bent in this excellent war film. A piece of real history created by the British has been turned into a great piece of fiction since it is the Americans that take the glory (they weren’t even in the war at this point).
Anyway a U-boat named U-571 has a run in with a British frigate and is left adrift. In the Atlantic. This U-boat is carrying the top secret Nazi coding device Enigma. The Americans the steal the Enigma so they can listen in to the Nazi plans. They must complete the mission without the Nazi knowing or the codes will be changed and it is back to square one. The plot is excellent and that is probably because it is true, well
not the American bit.
The acting is great and really manages to convey the sense of tension and fear the sailors experience when under the sea in leaky old subs. The cast is superb...

...with the struggle for survival of a Jewish man in Warsaw.
The Story
The movie is the real life story of celebrated Polish pianist Wladsylaw Spilzman who recorded his experiences of survival during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. Spilzman has a happy family comprising his father( Frank Finlay), mother(Maureen Lipman), his sisters and his brother Henryk. The movie begins with the German occupation of Poland in 1939 and slowly unfolds the horrors of the Nazi regime. Spilzman and his family find their lives getting progressively worse.
The Nazis start off with restrictions forbidding Jews from entering restaurants, walking in the parks, as he tells his girl friend Dorota, who is shocked at the absurdity of the rule. And then Jews are not allowed to keep money in their home beyond a certain amount and what they eat is also decided by the Nazis. But all...
