what a combination, National treasure is so dire I find it difficult to imagine how these 2 could be paired up together other than a Disney smash cash tie in. take my advice, buy POTC on its own!

National treasure -

Nicolas 'Francis ford coppola got me the job' cage stars in this duck as a treasure hunter following in his father/grandfathers/great-grandfathers footsteps. Tales of Masonic/knights templar treasure send him from the arctic to new York via blah blah blah on his search for treasure his relatives gave up on. There's a feeble attempt at characterisation via his falling out with his father & an equally unremarkable romantic plot line between cage & Kruger. Apparently the founding fathers were masons & hid ancient treasures of the knights templar via clues on the back of the declaration of independence. Cue FBI chases after they steal the declaration before the baddies can get it etc etc. A far cry from any Indiana Jones movie, closer to Sahara which was unsatisfying but remarkable in comparison. Not enough tension, too long considering nothing much happened outside of the above. Overall a light-hearted Disney film, fun for the 12-14 year olds maybe but make sure they don't write any of this up as part of their history homework as they may end up with a D-

Director :Jon Turteltaub(cool runnings, 3 ninjas)
Released 2004
Runtime 131mins
Advertising tagline "the greatest adventure history has ever revealed"
Starring : nicholas cage(snake eyes, con air, the rock) Diane Kruger (Troy) Sean Bean (Ronin, Troy, Sharpe-TV Series)

Pirates of the Caribbean-

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, there's only one person you are going to be watching in this swashbuckling adventure and its not Orlando Bloom ( he's still trying to act his way out of a paper bag). POTC is a ghost/treasure/magic/curse story about pirates kidnapping a beautiful governors daughter in an attempt to remove a curse and escape with their doubloons in their pantaloons. Depp, the baddie teams up with Bloom, the goodie, to try and save her from the pirates cutlasses once they have used her to remove the curse. The special effects of the undead ghost crew of the Barbarossa(the pirate ship) were admirable, almost admiralable.

Mackenzie crook pops up (from the Office sit-com) to offer some comedic relief, jack davenport (from This life) also features as the unrequited lover of Knightley, acting as woodenly as ever.

The story leaves many gaps so as to make prequels & sequels possible but the star of the show is undoubtedly mr depp. After years of choosing low key indie flicks he may have sold out now for a handful of pieces of eight but if he can put in a couple more performances like this one it may be worth it..

Dirctor :Gore Verbinski ( the ring, the mexican)
Starring : johnny Depp ( edward scissor hands, charlie & the chocolate factory ) orlando bloom (lord of the rings) Keira knightley (star wars 1, king arthur, domino)
Runtime 143 minutes
Advertising tagline "prepare to be blown out of the water"
released 2003

you could probably pick up both of these individually for less than the £15.99 I saw this for but you would be better served to just get POTC and ditch national treasure as that should be left buried in my opinion.

2 discs, no extras, £15 on Amazon new, £11 used

I had to give it poorer ratings due to the inclusion of National treasure.the effects in POTC were pretty good but stunts/action/excitement were pretty thin on the ground with national treasure

not sure if this is allowed but i met a 'pirate' in Sydney in april this year who was the spitting image of Depp, here's a picture of him with my friend - http://earl-of-aldgate.livejournal.com/40152.html
