Well this was my hubby’s film choice and I am just so glad it was not a western. I was a bit dubious as he bought this film and the sequel in one go so I was praying that this film would be good as I knew I would have to watch the second one regardless even if I did not enjoy the first.
The film stars Nicholas Cage who plays the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates who as a little boy learns of some ancient treasure from his Grandfather. We then see Benjamin grown up where he is a treasure hunter and is in search of this missing treasure.
Benjamin has to follow and work out clues and his helped by his friend but soon finds out that certain people on his team are not working with him and are actually looking for the treasure for themselves. Sean Bean plays the role of the baddie who is forever on Benjamin’ trail and trying to beat his to the final post.
Benjamin soon finds that he need the declaration of Peace as there is supposed to be an invisible clue on the back but when he finds that the baddies are going to steal it he takes drastic action as steals in himself. From this point he has everyone chasing him for the theft but will he be able to get the clues and find the treasure before the baddies and the FBI catch up with him?
I was very surprised with this film as I did not think I would enjoy it but I have to say I really did. The storyline was quite far fetched but I looked past this to actually enjoy the film and the plot. Nicholas Cage who played the role of Benjamin Franklin was very good and believable in his role. He worked well with the other actors and they all had a good chemistry. I thought it was quite predictable that Sean Bean was the baddie but he did do the part justice and he looked very good!
There were a lot of things going on in the film with people chasing other people and lots of clues which had to be worked out but I did find that it was very easy to follow as it is in fact a children’s film.
The setting and scenery for the film was excellent and very realistic. I thought that a lot of attention to detail had been put into all of the background shots and especially into the effects. When they entered the tomb towards the end of the film it all looked very authentic and real indeed. The music was good even if none of the tracks were memorable. I found that it was all appropriate for the places which it was used.
The one thing which I do think was not needed in the film was the ‘getting it on’ of Benjamin and his latest helper from the Museum and did not thing this was ether needed or appropriate in a children’s film, but then again this is just my opinion and maybe it will be needed for the sequel.
The DVD which we have does have lots of bonus material which includes:-
Bonus Treasure Hunt - Level 1 National treasure on Location Opening Scene Animatic Alternate ending Deleted Scenes
We have not watched any of these features as I personally have no interest in them but hubby says that he will take a look at them once he has watched both of the films.
The DVD has a running time of 126 minutes which may seem a bit long for some but I found it to be a good length as the film continued to move at a good pace from the start and I was not loosing interest at any time. The certificate on this film is a PG as it does contain some mild action violence and peril. I will not be showing this to my boys though as they really would have no interest in it.
We paid just £4 for out DVD from Tesco which I felt was a great price and they also have the sequel for just £5. Well off to watch the sequel for me them!

(+) Fast pacy spy adventure, with great music and some equally great stunts. (-) Stunts a bit far fetched - but you expect that with this sort of film.

Advantages: A good, enjoyable script, with an excellent cast and decent direction. Good choice for all the family or just a friday night in Disadvantages: Justin Bartha will either annoy you or seem like the loveable fool
Advantages: Good escapism, quite action packed, one for conspiracy theorists! Disadvantages: Very American!, story is pretty far stretched and confusing (though still quite enjoyable)
