~ MAIN CHARACTERS ~
Nicholas Cage- Benjamin Gates
Ben is the son of explorer and treasure hunter Patrick and after finding treasure in the first film he wants to set the score with the truth about his family. He is a determined and strong minded person and had strong family values. He never gives up on an idea and will do anything to restore his family's name. I like the values Ben has and what he goes through.
Justin Bartha - Riley Poole
Riley is Ben's assistant and after their success in the last film he is trying to build a career in writing and publishing his own book which turns out to be a waste of time. He is a very good friend of Ben and sacrifices himself several times to help him. Even though he seems scared of a lot he overcomes them to help his friends. He is also has a good humorous nature which brings comedy value to the film.
Diane Kruger- Abigail Chase After separating from Ben, Abi is trying to start a fresh and is starting to date again. As Ben involves her in their latest quest she becomes more and more interested in what they are doing and finally seeks to help them. Although she seems independent and strong willed she shows weaknesses when around Ben and you can see she still loves him. She is also very intelligent and brave.
Ed Harris- Mitch Wilkinson
Mitch seeing Ben as a rival goes after the treasure himself and tries many ways to get rid of Ben. He as a gang who protect him and he is very wealthy. His greed over powers his senses as he wants the treasure and loves it when Ben's family is seen as mental. Mitch to me seems angry a lot of the time and doesn't really have any real friends or family.
~ OTHER CHARACTERS ~
Jon Voight- Patrick Gates Helen Mirren- Emily Appleton Harvey Keitel- FBI Agent Peter Bruce Greenwood- US President Joel Gretsch- Thomas Gates
~ PLOT ~
Ben Gates is a treasure Hunter and tells the story of his great grandfather being killed over keeping a map of the city of gold a secret. No one believes his claims and Mitch Wilkinson tries to prove him wrong. There is a rivalry between Ben and Mitch as it was both of their Great Grandfathers included in this story. After finding a clue to a treasure hunt Ben and Riley start to investigate and are shown that there are more clues to find The City of God. The clues get even harder to find including breaking into Buckingham Palace and The White House and Mitch catches on about the hunt and follows Ben. The gang follow the clues and sacrifice a lot to be led to the supposed site of this treasured land.
~ OPINIONS ~
Although the film had a lot included and different locations I think overall that it is a good film but it isn't really anything special. I didn't find myself excited or interested a lot and there wasn't much that really surprised me. The film has good qualities though and I liked the cast. Having a good cast though they should have been able to give a better atmosphere and emotions. The action in the film was ok, the car chase was properly the best action sequence as they drove through the busy streets and there was a few stunts performed which were good but it didn't really impress me much. It has a PG rating so there wasn't much it could include such as horror, violence and elements more for the adults mind. Even though I would say it was aimed at kids between 8-18 it doesn't do much to try grab a wider audience.
The different locations were a positive side to the film and I loved how many historical places they fitted into two hours. The main ones included- The Mount Rushmore, The Library of Congress, The White House, Buckingham Palace, Mount Vermon and The original statue of Laboulaye. This quite impressed me and it was brilliant to see how they involved the treasure hunting in these settings. It also kept the action slightly more interesting and to keep the audiences attention. These locations were also filmed beautifully. There were amazing crane shots especially of Mount Rushmore and it looked amazing. In the last push for the city of gold I did like the caves and the scenery was really good. It reminded me of something off of the Lara Croft games, having puzzles included in traps and rocks and water. Being based on a book there are a few elements that differ slightly. These are only little things such as when Ben and Abi find the plank carving in Buckingham Palace they only take a picture in the story where as in the film they take it with them. I am surprised this is a Disney film to be honest and think that it doesn't carry the high quality and standards of a Disney film. Even though it is good Disney are making a better effort for older children and not just animations for small kids. There are apparently talks of a sequel to make it a trilogy but I won't be rushing to get it.
~ DVD ~
The DVD was released in May 2008 and can be brought on Play.com for only £3.99. Even though it's a good price there are not a lot of features added.
Special Features-

- Rotten Tomatoes- 32% - 48/100 Scored by reviews - The film had 5 nomiations which included Best Film.
~ RECOMMEND ~
To be honest I wouldn't recommend you go out and get this film I would wait until it's on television. It is an ok film it has plenty of action but it is limited due to the PG certificate. It was that impressive and doesn't create a brilliant atmosphere.

Review of National Treasure 2 - Book Of Secrets (DVD)
Advantages: Action-packed second half relives the original fun Disadvantages: Dire first half with every sequel cliche going
...flaws of the first outing. National Treasure: Book of Secrets manages to fall wholeheartedly into the final category. Dang!
If you've seen the original NT movie then you know completely what to expect here: history buff Ben Gates (did he have a real job before becoming a treasure hunter? I can't recall!) stumbles across some fantastical secret, and is soon jetting around the world, defiling national 'treasures', and just being a bit of a brainiac ... ...was fairly fun! In the first instalment, treasure clues had been left on the $1 bill, the back of the American Constitution, etc etc - so yes, some famous and well-guarded 'treasures' for Gates (Nic Cage) and his sidekicks Riley and Abigail to track down.
Roll forward to the follow up, and the first half of this film played into every terrible sequel cliche going. First, you can't leave the characters with their successes from the end of the first ...

Advantages: Great adventure Disadvantages: Unbelievability factor, but this is kind of the point
The 2004 film National Treasure took about $350 million at the box office worldwide. This prompted producer Jerry Bruckheimer to give the go ahead for a sequel to be made, and last year saw the release of National Treasure 2: The Book of Secrets. The film took just over a month to outgross the 2004 film, and is every bit as entertaining an action film as the first, if a little far fetched.
The Plot
Not long after the end of the Civil War in America, ... ...cracks, then look no further. National Treasure 2: The Book of Secrets is a rollercoaster action adventure film with fast paced location changing scenery. The camera work and special effects are brilliantly done, and the actors are all incorporated into this as well.
In terms of settings, director Jon Turteltaub has gone to town, filming in Buckingham Palace, the Library of Congress, Mount Rushmore and the centre of Paris. Throw in some car chases ...

Advantages: Good story, likeable characters Disadvantages: May be a bit too watered down for some
National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets is the sequel to the smash hit "National Treasure" and reunites Nicholas Cage, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger and director Jon Turteltaub from that film.
Ben Gates (Cage) is at a talk where he is presenting new evidence about John Wilkes Booth and the 18 pages missing from his diary where a man, Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris), produces a missing piece of the diary from nowhere. Upon further studying it seems to implicate ... ...If you like the first National Treasure, it's safe to say you'll like this one too. It has the same sense of mystery as the first film, and the same unraveling of historical facts. Again this one deals with a conspiracy and a secret involving many historical figures where you have to unravel clues and decode puzzles in order to prove you're worthy enough to find the prize.
Again the cast do a good job, Justin Bartha is great as the comic relief ...

Advantages: Great story, amazing clue finding, great sets Disadvantages: Dont find out what is on page 47! National tresure 3 i think!
...I saw the trailer for National Treasure 2 as I enjoyed the 1st instalment so much. If like me you love the treasure hunting, clue solving, puzzle completing, underground temple finding of films such as Indiana Jones and National Treasure you will love this. After seeing National Treasure 2 in the cinema, I couldn't wait to get it on DVD to watch it all over again.
I love the idea that there are hidden temples and passageways belonging to ancient ... ...enough we could find them. National Treasure 2, like the first brings this to the cinema screen once again.
This time around Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) teams up once more with his father Patrick (Jon Voight), partner Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) and side kick Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) to set the record straight about his ancestors wrongly accused as being apart of the Abraham Lincoln assassination. ...start by saying the original National Treasure, is crazy good. I loved the reference to history, specifically American history, 'n' its clever references and facts that somehow all lead to them finding the treasure in an original and unpredictable way. But this one wasnt as good, I felt like this film was missing something- almost like the writers could not think of any new, no more clever clues to be solved?... and therefore they just shoved loads ... ...one movie.
Firstly the plot
The jist of the movie is about Ben (Nicohlas Cage) proving the innocence of his great-great grandfather who is implicated as a key conspirator in the death of Abraham Lincoln. Ultimatley leading Ben on a chain of clues that takes him on a chase across the world. This journey leads both Ben and his crew ( full of recognisable faces) not only to surprising revelations--- but also the worlds most secret of secrets. The ...

NationalTreasure2: The Book of Secrets has just been released on DVD in the UK, and is available from amazon.co.uk for £11.98. Naturally, wait a while and this price will drop, but it's entertaining for sure, and worth a buy at some point.
I'm going to give this 4 stars out of 5. It kept me entertained for the near two hours of its length, and even some of the most cinematic masterpieces don't do that. Thumbs up Bruckheimer!

DVD Description
Treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) embarks on a new adventure in director Jon Turtletaub's sequel to NATIONAL TREASURE. Ben and his father, Patrick (Jon Voight), take great pride in their ancestors and their family's devotion to the United States. When Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) produces a page from the diary of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth allegedly linking Ben's great-great grandfather to the plot, Ben and Patrick set out on a path to clear their family's name. Ben also believes that the diary page contains hints to the whereabouts of a treasure map leading to an ancient city made of gold, and soon the hunt is on. Tech expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and Ben's now ex-girlfriend Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) join the Gates in their quest, which takes them from Washington, DC, to Paris, London and the Black Hills of South Dakota. It's true that the storyline and the actions of Gates and his team--which include breaking into the Queen's study at Buckingham Palace, sneaking into the Oval Office, and kidnapping the President of the United States--are completely unbelievable. But with a storyline built on true, interesting trivia and great locations, this film is an amusing, family-friendly romp. Cage has some great moments as Gates-- loyal, patriotic, fair to a fault, and very funny as he goads on Buckingham Palace security. Harris plays Wilkinson with just the right air of mystery and menace: is he after fortune, or does he just want to leave his own mark in history? Helen Mirren fits the bill as Ben's mother and Patrick's estranged ex-wife, Emily, a scholar and historian in her own right.
