I have to be honest I had never heard of ''Napoleon Dynamite.'' I may have glanced over the tittle while looking to rent a film but it did not stand out to me. My sister recomended the film to me one afternoon while flicking through pay per view-there was nothing else that appealed to me at the time so I thought -why not??
The film seemed pretty appealing to me right from the word go,the opening titles were done in an original way using various props i.e pencils, dinner plates, library books etc etc all used cleverly to display the opening credits.(you will see what I mean when you watch it) The opening title music track was pretty cool too.
The opening seen cuts straight to this geeky looking kid ''Napoleon Dynamite'' and when I say geeky I mean geeky! BIG curly hair, BIG glasses, moon boots(remember them-think they're back actually) weird pants and not forgetting those 80's? print t-shirts that are sported throughout the film(inc teddies horses/helicopters etc etc.
Napoleon
is a geeky awkward teenager who comes from a somewhat weird family. His elder brother Kip is 32 . Kip and Napoleon both live with their grandmother but due to a change in circumstances Uncle Rico comes to stay and take care of the boys ,this is because Grandmother becomes hospitalised after a quad bike accident.(she is a secret quad biker) Favourite scenes of mine include one with the two brothers winding each other up like brothers do aboutt various comical things, there is the ''chap stick '' scene which is funny,Napoleon has to call home from school and older brother Kip is less then willing to help his younger brother out . Napoleon giving Kip a ''pull'' into town is funny(Napoleon is on a bike /Kip is on skates-reminds me of when my brother used to pull me around the village by bike while I was on his skate board!) There is another really funny scene where Kip decides to take a martial arts lesson after seeing a catchy add on tv for it, and he brings Napoleon along -The instructor is wearing some scary looking pants from the 80's or something...see Kip get slapped!!! Also Later on in the film Uncle Rico purchases a ''time machine'' which Napoleon tries out with the help of his brother-''ouch'' that will get you laughing.
There is a cool ''skit'' scene not to be missed -maybe pick up some new dance moves from Napoleon. There are several other uncle Rico scenes that are funny -''I want that...'' ..''I can't do it''... There are many many scenes that will just make you laugh because of the way something is said or even just watching the way that Napoleon runs. The humour is pretty dry really .. Watch out for best friend 'Pedro' and also for Napoleon's 'love' interest .... lets just say he could do with some tips when it comes to chatting up the ladies! Oh and Kips internet lover ...so funny!
I'm not going to go into the story line as to be honest the story line isn't what made the film for me -its the humor that makes the film-if i'm honest I wasn't really following to see what the story line was properly the first time I saw the film so if like me you never get the film the first time round it dosn't matter as you will just find the film funny anyway. That said-This film has a straight forward story line very easy to follow. Since watching the film on pay per view, I've purchased the dvd and have watched the film many times now , which is rare for me as I usually watch a film once and then leave it a long time between, before watching it again. This film is on my list of favourite all time films.
In conclusion I recommend this film to anyone who has ever felt like the odd ball whilst growing up or even now ,this film has plenty of laughs .The film is brilliantly spot on with the style and the soundtrack for the film-I might even have to get the soundtrack.
Watch out for the end scene after the credits!!
I have this film on region 2 dvd
