Naach - "Dance" (Hindi)

As we would expect from a Ram Gopal Varma film this is a high budget, high gloss bollywood film. Naach is full of songs, crazy outfits and intense dance routines. Unlike Ram Gopal Varma's other big hits (Rangeela and Mast) this does not have the usual Indian film industry as a back drop. Instead it a a much more realistic version of how the industry works. Naach is not one of the usual fantasy based saccharine filled films that are produced by the Indian film industry. The actors and script writers have succeeded in making the characters in this film realistic.

There are two leads in this film. Rewa is the female lead and plays the part of a struggling choreographer. Abhi is her best friend and plays the part of a wannabe actor. Both Rewa and Abhi are trying to get a foot into the bollywood film industry. They both have extreme drive and ambition and we begin the film by watching them try to realize their dreams.

Rewa's hopes are broken when she is rejected from a choreography job because the lead actress chooses her friend to choreograph the film. Abhi however gets a big job in a hindi film and quickly becomes a successful actor. Abhi wants to be part of the bollywood industry as it is and is happy to play a cliché. Rewa on the other hand want to change the industry and take it in a new direction steering way clear of old clichés. Due to differences in their ideologies and Abhi's new found fame the two friends choose to go their different ways.

Rewa continues with her struggle to be recognized as a good choreographer and is eventually approached by a music company boss who offers her a job. He asks Rewa to be in a music video as an actress. This catapults Rewa into fame and she becomes a star overnight.

Ram Gopal Varma creates a very touching film which clevery synthesizes the realism of the Indian film industry which is ultimately immoral with the fantastical story of two people who find fame and fortune on their own terms.

Both of them are now successful and meet in a restaurant. Abhi tells Rewa that he loves her and that he always has loved her and wants to marry her. Rewa rejects Abhi's offer making their friendship even more awkward.

Abhi and Rewa are then asked to star opposite eachother in a musical film as the male and female leads. The second part of the film is mainly full of the tempestuous relationship between Rewa and Abhi. There is a lot of fighting and lots of angry dance numbers with energetic, fast paced choreography to show how turbulent their relationship is. Eventually as is the case with all Ram Gopal Verma's films there is a happy ending and Abhi and Rewa end up together.

In my opinion Ram Gopal Verma has taken one of his older films, Rangeela, and remade it so that it is better than the original. Its analysis of the Indian film industry shows a very real version of what it is to be part of that industry. It shows how a persons ideals can be molded by the promise fame and fortune. It explores the relationship between two people who have very different outlooks on life. Rewa being an idealist and Abhi being a realist.
The name of this film which means dance is not lost on the film. It is full of wonderful music and dance numbers. Rewa's dances are filled with manic desire and energy and are portrayed beautifully by Ram Gopal Verma. The intense love story is heightened by the music and dance numbers which lend an abstract quality to the film.

This film is a pleasure to watch. Although the storyline is essentially a simple love story the direction and realism make it different to the normal films churned out by the bollywood machine. The dance sequences are extremely expressive and wonderfully choreographed. In my opinion this is a film to watch.
