Mystic River is a suspense thriller/drama which follows the investigation of the murder of a teenage girl. Her father (Sean Penn), the detective (Kevin Bacon) and one of the main suspects (Tim Robbins) all live in the neighbourhood who's banks rest on the Mystic River. They have lived there all their lives and were good friends as children until a life changing event shook their world forever.
Years later the men don't really see much of each other until their lives are all thrown back together because of the girl's murder.
The film follows each of the 3 men in their plight in dealing with what has gone on and their efforts to find the killer. From the outset you find yourself drawn into the movie and into the characters' lives. With Tim Robbins as the main suspect I found myself constantly asking the questions "Did he? Didn't he?" and my mind was changing all the time.
It is a very sad and emotive movie which is cleverly directed and very well produced. It has a very good storyline with an extremely strong cast and outstanding performances. The Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor went to Sean Penn and Tim Robbins respectively. It was also directed by Clint Eastwood, but there is no horses or swinging doors in sight!
If you like movies which involve you and make you think throughout, and you enjoyed movies like 'Copycat' and 'Silence of the Lambs' then rent this movie.

Have heard mixed things about this film. Not sure if I will like it as I loved Silence of the Lambs but thought Copycat was a dreadful film. Rich

One of the best films I've seen lately. Great acting, you feel sympathy and understanding even when one of the leads does something truly terrible (trying not to give the story away!). J
