Mystic River 2003, Drama/Crime, 137 mins.
Based on the Novel by Dennis Lehane, writer of TV series The Wire 2002. Directed by Clint Eastwood, with an all-star cast winning two 2 Academy Awards, Best actor Sean Penn, Best Supporting Actor, Tim Robbins, this is a film not to be missed.
When 3 boys, Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins) and Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) were growing up together in Boston the terrible events of their childhood helped to shape their futures too. The three characters have to come to terms with their own personal demons when they are reunited through the tragic murder of Jimmy’s 19-year-old daughter Katie.
Sean is now a Homicide police detective and is brought in to deal with the case along with his partner Whitney Powers (Laurence Fishbourne). As an adult Sean struggles to deal with childhood memories, whilst trying he is also struggling to come to terms with the breakdown of his marriage.
Jimmy took a different road in life; he was on the other side of the law and spent two years in jail for robbery. Whilst inside his young wife died of cancer, leaving him with a young daughter Katie.
Katie became Jimmy’s world along with his new wife Anna Beth (Laura Linny) and two small daughters. Jimmy is devastated by the murder and with the help of the local yobs The Savage Brothers, does some investigating of his own.
Dave is a man struggling to deal with the past, although he has found it with in him to carry on, now married to Celeste (Marcia Gray Harden) and a young son. In the events that unfold his past catches up with him and he becomes connected to Katie’s Murder, with horrific consequences.
Clint Eastwood’s input in to this film is obvious, and the music he has created to accompany the stunning acting just adds to his brilliance as a director and producer. I myself found the film thrilling, compelling, interesting, it had me guessing the whole time but also move me emotionally.
This is what Clint Eastwood said about the film, “ This story can satisfy an audience on many levels, the “whodunit” fans maybe happy with just the mystery and absorb the other content in the periphery – others will get into the background of the characters and the detective story will be meaningful only in relation to the overall tragedy. The story is layered and as each layer is peeled off, more is revealed. Every time a question gets answered it only raises more questions”
Clint Eastwood: Director/Producer/Music: Clint Eastwood has starred in 45 films (appearing in 56) Directed 24 and produced 19. In March 2003 The Actors Screen Guild gave him a Life Time Achievement Award and in 2000 he was awarded Lifetime Career Achievement award from New York’s National Board of review. Eastwood certainly put hi all into this film and the effects are tremendous.
CAST:
Sean Penn (Jimmy Markum) 3 times Academy award for Best actor, in 1995 – for Tim Robbins film “Dead Man Walking”, 1999 for Woody Allan’s “Sweet and Lowdown” and most recently for his role of a mentally challenged character fighting for custody of his daughter in Jessie Nelson’s “I Am Sam”. Is it any wonder he went on to win another in this film as well? Sean’s performance in this film is intense, he is extremely compelling, if he doesn’t move you, then I don’t what will.
Tim Robbins (Dave Boyle) has a long list of credits including writing, producing and directing. Robbins won Best Actor Award at Cannes International and a Golden Globe for The Player. The Actors Screen Guild also nominated him for a Golden Globe for Bob Roberts and for his outstanding performance in “The Shaw Shank Redemption” Tim took away an Academy Award for Best Supporting Artist in this movie and like Sean it was well deserved. Tim had a challenge with the character of Dave a very in-depth character with many different levels.
Kevin Bacon (Sean Devine) his most recent films include, Hollow man, Trapped, My Dog Ship. He is also known for his work in Wild things 1998, and Picture Perfect 1997. Kevin did a good job as the detective in this film. One of his best films yet!
Laurence Fishbourne (Whitney Powers) recently starred as Morpheus in The Matrix Reloaded. Laurence gives a solid performance as Bacon’s partner, the two have a good on screen relationship.
Marcia Gray Harden (Celeste Boyle) won an Academy Award in 2001 for her portrayal of Lee Krasaner opposite Ed Harris in the feature film Pollock. From her success in Mystic River she also got a role in the recent film Mona Lisa’s Smile. Marcia gives convincing performance as Dave’s wife, and shows a lot of emotion, that a mother in fear would.
Laura Linney (Anna Beth Markum) received Academy Award Nominations for a Screen Actors Guild award, Golden Globe award and Independent Sprit awards for her role as Sammy Prescott in Kenneth Lanergan’s “You Can Count on Me”. Laura’s performance is supporting of Sean in Mystic River. She shows the depth of her character especially at the end of the film.
To conclude I defiantly recommend this film as one to watch!!! It is out to rent at all good video stores; I rented my copy from Blockbuster for £3.75.
