Mystic Pizza 1988, rating 15, running time 104 mins.

Mystic Pizza is a great girly film, and is one of Julia Roberts earlier appearances. This film is about friendships, those of mother and daughter, sisters, friends & work colleagues. It also looks at romantic relationships, age differences, social differences and fear of commitment.

The Story

This film follows the friendships of three waitress at the Mystic Pizza restaurant, Daisy Arujo (Julia Roberts), her younger sister Kat Arujo ( Annabeth Gish) and JoJo ( Lili Taylor), the three of them work for Leona (Conchata Ferrell) and long to know what it is she puts on her famous pizza.

All three of them work hard at the restaurant to earn the money they need to get out of their small fishing town, Daisy is the eldest and most rebellious of the three, she is beautiful and uses her looks to full advantage, JoJo has been dating her boyfriend for some time and he wants them to get married and settle down but Jojo is scared to commit to him, Kat on the other hand is an academic girl and longs to go to Yale, she is working 4 jobs to save the money to pay her fees.

This film explores the girls relationships with each other Daisy and Kat are sisters and like most siblings they often quarrel and say hurtful things to each other, Jojo is friends with both girls and doesn't like to see them fight, she admires Daisy for her looks and wild attitude, but is proud of Kat and her intelligence, most of the time Jojo has to act as mediator between the sisters.

We also get a look at the girls relationships with three very different men, Daisy is pursuing a boy called Charlie, Charlie comes from a very wealthy family unlike Daisy and has everything he could possibly want, Daisy wants to be excepted by him and his family and vice versa but it seems both sides have their reservations about the couple.
Jojo and Bill have been dating for some time, Bill is a Christian and wants to marry Jojo, Jojo on the other hand is quite happy with the way their relationship is going and loves to get her hands on Bill as often as she can much to his horror.
Kat is a studious girl with not much time for boys, but when she takes a baby sitting job she starts to have feelings for an older man.

My Thoughts

This film is typically 80's which I love, I really enjoy a good teen movie and this is a classic in my book! All three actress's are brilliant in this film and I particularly enjoy seeing Julia Roberts in her early days. The story is heart warming and can bring on a few tears towards the end. All in all it is an enjoyable watch with some great early performances from some now established actors.

Actors

Daisy Arujo is played by a very young Julia Roberts, you can see star quality shining through in this film as she takes on the role of fiery Daisy. Her looks and smile where put into good use during this role and helped her to gain her most famous role of Vivian in Pretty Woman 1990, she as of course gone on to be big star and one of my favourite actress's.

Kat Arujo is played by Annabeth Gish, she gives a great performance in the role of the studious Kat trying to come to terms with her first crush. She has gone on to star in many TV series such as The West Wing and The X Files.

Jojo is played by Lili Taylor, Lili also gives a great performance as bubbly Jojo, she has gone on to star as Lisa Kimmel Fisher in the series Six Feet Under.

This film was directed by Donald Mark Petrie, Donald seems to have a flair for chick flicks and has also directed Miss Congeniality and How to loose a Guy in 10 Days.

Where can I buy it?

This film is available at Amazon for £5.97 or new and used from £3.99.
