Mystic Pizza is the story of two sisters, Daisy, played by Julia Roberts and Kat, played by Annabeth Gish, and their friend JoJo, played by Lili Taylor(she was the girl in Haunting of Hill House-the spooky one with the carved children and the insomniacs). Anyway, the story follows their summer after high school as they prepare to go out into the real world, focusing on each of their love lives, as they work together in a pizza restaurant in the Connecticut fishing village-Mystic-hence the film title! There is a twist in the title, however, since the incredients in the pizza are secret, thus the title 'Mystic Pizza' has a double meaning.....clever eh???
Daisy, who is wild and unnhibited and always on the look out for love, meets a rich, handsome yacht owning law student who is on the mooch from his Ivy League univerisity. Kat, reserved and brainy, who is preparing to go to Yale to study Astronomy, seems too busy for romance but after having longingly observed the unfolding of her sister's romance, soon falls for an older architecht, Tim, a married man, whose daughter she babysits. JoJo, scatty, lively and fickle feels pressured into marriage by her fisherman boyfriend Bill but is terrified of committing to him... infact the opening scene of the film is her on her wedding day.. where she ultimately faints at the altar and the wedding is called off... however the end scene also features JoJos wedding day... but ahs a somewhat more successful ending.
The film has gentle, innocent humour and shows solid performances from Gish, Taylor and Roberts alike-who has the typical BIG hair of the 80s and the clothes to match! Oh and big teeth too but thats always the story with Julia Roberts really!
There are various sub-plots including the visit of an infamous ftelevision food critic to the Mystic Pizza Restaurant.
The film resolves itself quiety yet satisfactorally, as each of the three girls seem to find their path in life and look hopefully to the future.
