Like I said before , I wasn't really fussed about watching this film , although once it started , I was glued to the screen. I found the film to be more like a documentary than a film ; Before I found out it was based on a book , I actually thought it was a real life story. I even thought the characters were real.

A few weeks ago , myself and a few friends went to the cinema. We hadn't really chosen a film beforehand , although I thought we would have gone for something funny and 'teen like' like Bruno. So when the others decided they wanted to see 'My Sister's Keeper' , I wasn't really all for it , as I was looking for a 'comedy' like Bruno but because all the others wanted to see this film , I went along with it.

Anna was born so that she would be a genetic match for her older sister Kate , who has suffered from leukemia for most of her life. Because of this , Anna is unable to lead the life she wants to live , because her sister depends upon her so much. However , when Kate turns thirtenn , she goes into renal failure ; Anna knows that she will have to donate one of her kidneys to Kate. Anna is angry with her parents for not letting her choose what she does with her own body , however is Anna really been as selfish as she comes across ? Watch My Sister's Keeper to find out!
Like I said before , I wasn't really fussed about watching this film , although once it started , I was glued to the screen. I found the film to be more like a documentary than a film ; Before I found out it was based on a book , I actually thought it was a real life story. I even thought the characters were real.
Before watching this film , I had read a couple of reviews in magazines about it , so I knew it was about a teenage girl who had cancer. I don't like sad films of this kind , so I wasn't really sure whether I would be able to sit through it. I had imagined the movie to be depressing and really negative , although it's suprising , although it is based on a horrible thing , there are definately some positives in this movie. Although I had just seen , what I would probably call the saddest movie I have ever seen , I left the cinema with a positive mood. The film certainly ends with an inspiring message ; go and live your life before it's too late.
I was amazed by the acting talent in this film. Sofia Vassilieva was brilliant as the young girl with cancer. After watching a film , I always like to 'find out' about the actors involved , and before doing my research , I had thought that Sofia would probably be 'aged-twenty-something' and playing a younger character as the character was quite mature and I'm sure quite a difficult character to potray. So when I discovered that she is in fact just sixteen years old , I was shocked. I couldn't believe how good of a job she had done playing the part of Kate ; from what I could see , it certainly wasn't an easy role. She did an amazing job , as did the other main actors. I have seen Cameron Diaz in films before , but to me , this has to be her best role yet!
At first I wasn't too keen on the character , Anna. I couldn't belive how selfish she was when she could see how her sister was getting sicker and sicker and yet she refused to help. Although towards the end of the movie , I really liked Anna , and it turns out that she wasn't so selfish as we all thought she was. I also wasn't too keen on Cameron Diaz character at first , as I thought she was a real 'pushy parent' , forcing Anna to 'help' her sister , but then as the movie continued , I actually began to feel sorry for her she was only trying her best.
This movie not only shows how cancer affects a victim , it also shows how it affects their whole world as well as that of the family. Kate's family worked so hard , doing things and not doing other things to make Kate feel as normal as possible.
Although the film is based on the book , 'My Sister's Keeper' , I havn't actually read it , although I have heard the film differs slightly to the book. I really enjoyed the film , even though I hadn't originally thought that I would , but I wouldn't want to read the book , now that I know the story , the same as , I wouldn't want to buy the DVD now that I've seen it , because I found it was such a sad story and I wouldn't want to keep watching it over and over again! It was a great film to watch once! I actually found the film to be quite educational. It was just the right timing , and didn't go on and on! Although it flashed back and forth between events , it wasn't enough to confuse the viewer , if something it made me even more interested in the film.
It's quite hard to describe this film as it fills you with so many different emotions ; sadness , happiness , guilt , determination....what the character goes through , the viewer goes through too. The family were so 'welcoming' to watch , that it made me feel as if I was a member. I certainly felt close to the family by the end ; I even cried a little , and I am not someone who cries easily at films etc , no matter how sad I think they are. On the other hand , all I could hear throughout the movie was 'sniffs' from the audience , as from what I could hear , everyone was crying.
I liked how the story was told using flashbacks and different character's having a go at narrating , as I thought it brought so much more to the movie; by letting the characters' explain how they felt and how each different event which occured affected them. It also allowed the viewer to get to know the characters a bit more , and by doing this , I found it to be a very affective technique. It also made the film more interesting as we were hearing things from different points of view , as well as watching the events happen ourselves , and judging it just by watching. But to have each characters opinion on that situation made it even better.
I found many scenes sad in this film , but , one 'story' in the film which I felt touched by was the relationship between Kate and Taylor. It was shocking how well they handles such an emotional thing ; neither of them knew their fate , but they both knew they had to enjoy their time together! I think the fact that they both suffered from the same illness , made their love stronger and made their relationship work so well. It was quite amazing to see how they both handled their illness so well ; as though it was normal ; they didn't once complain , they just got on with life and kept positive.
I would definately reccommend this film! It's brilliant!
...the release of the film My Sister's Keeper and decided that I would give this a watch, all I knew was that it was based on a novel but really had no idea what the exact plot was about. My sister keeper is director Nick Cassavetes' latest offering after his critically acclaimed Alpha Dog and hugely popular The Notebook. Nick sticks to his strength-unfolding an emotional drama on screen. MYSISTERSKEEPER
2002
This is a film only review
There seems to be a little confusion with this film.
This category is actually for the 2002 film directed by Ron Lagomarsino and starring Kathy Bates and Lynn Redgrave and not the more recent film by the same name directed by Nick Cassavetes starring Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin
This film is a completely different story and is based on a true story of the same name (Not the Jodi Picoult novel) written by Margaret Moorman.
The story of the film is tragically like that of Ms Moorman's own life.
When Margaret Moorman's older sister, Sally, was first hospitalised with schizophrenia in 1959, her family denied the truth to neighbours, friends and even to themselves. It was only thirty years later, when their mother's death made her Sally's sole carer ...
Advantages: Beautifully filmed, Beautifully acted, and just a fantastic story Disadvantages: You will very likely cry your eyes out. Costs you more money as you have to buy tissues :D
Ever since I heard back in 2008 that they were making a film adaptation of the Jodi Picoult novel MySistersKeeper, I?ve been umming and awwing over whether to go and see it. The book I could never read again, I didn?t really completely enjoy it, I found the ending to be a bit of a problem and it just didn?t really feel right in my head. When I heard however that they had changed the ending for the movie, it made the decision for me, and I knew I had to see it.
The Plot
When their young daughter Kate is diagnosed with leukaemia, Kate and Brian Fitzgerald are in despair. Then Kate?s doctor suggests quite an unorthodox medical procedure to maybe save Kate?s life. Kate is in dire need of bone marrow, and because her brother and parents are not matches it doesn?t look good for her, the doctor suggests that they make a donor baby ...
Advantages: Maturely presented Disadvantages: Hard to handle subject matter for some, perhaps
donor every time sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) is in need.
Since birth, Anna has been subjected to needles and the like for her sister's comfort, and to prolong her life, and she has had enough. Suing her parents isn't plain sailing, though, and the film has some real tearjerking moments as Kate's condition is explored quite starkly by Piccoult's story. The conversion to screen sees a number of scenes where the effects on the family are shown, and this is done particularly powerfully, with brother Jesse's (Evan Ellingson) involvement crucial and just as moving as the others' dramatic scenes.
In fact, the film, which lasted around an hour and a half, flew by and kept me entranced from start to finish. It was emotional, sure, and brought a tear to my eye. I didn't manage to completely break down as we were on a plane and were interrupted ...
If you're going to make a weepy, there's no reason you can't make it with intelligence and insight as the makers of My Sister's Keeper have done (Hollywood Reporter, 25/06/2009)
