Shakespearean speech in this very loose adaptation of "Henry IV." In Seattle, Mike, a male prostitute and narcoleptic, meets Scott, who is rebelling against his wealthy family by working the streets. The two decide to embark on a search for Mike's long-lost mother, and their journey leads them first to Mike's home in Idaho and then to Italy.

the Pacific Northwest, and gay and straight,My Own Private Idahois the 1991 masterpiece by director Gus Van Sant. River Phoenix gave the most generous and memory-searing performance of his tragically shortened career as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic street hustler in search of his mother. His best friend, Scott, played by Keanu Reeves, is a son of privilege who fosters plans of rejoining the moneyed world of his father after gallivanting with assorted urchins and ne'er-do-wells. The beautifully symmetrical story that emerges between the two is one of friendship, yearning for lost time, and sexual identity conveyed with a poet's eye for landscape. The camera lingers on abandoned houses in golden fields and time-lapse clouds, providing what T.S. Eliot called "the objective correlative", external representations of interior emotional states. We're treated to striking iconic sequences like a barn falling from the sky and still-life scenes of carnal entanglement. The supporting cast is a rogues' gallery that includes Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Udo Kier, director WilliamRichert, and a variety of "non-actors" pulled literally off the street to provide documentary veracity to a film that gleefully careens into riffs on Henry IV. It's beautiful.--Ryan Boudinot

Gus Van Sant directs, his only popular status seems to be thought by many to have ruined the Hitchcock cult thriller psycho. When you watch it for the first time, you may be forgiven for thinking it's a porn film; one early scene being that of a fairly sexually graphic nature. As you sit on the edge of your seat wondering where you'll be taken next a strange but enspiring story unfolds.

Mike spends most of the film searching his soul and indeed falling in love with Scott, where Scott spends the film lapping up his freedom and breaking Mike's heart, before he settles quite happily into his lavish 'real life'. This being said, Scott and his real father are alienated and he finds solice in Bob (William Richert), the father of the streets. Bob and Scott's real father are mirrored, both dying around the same time and it is here we see that even with Bob dead, Scott 'Favors' his money over friendships.
There are several other characters of interest, these being Budd played by Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mike's brother (James Russo) who ultimately ends up being his father(!), and finally Hans (Udo Kier, better known as the guy who gets his fangs pulled out and sizzled to death in Blade) a very weird german guy indeedy.
Do not underestimate the smaller characters, as throughout we hear small and true life stories of hustlers, and the reality of the content can really touch you.
If you watch this film then please watch with an open mind, then watch it three times more, and then twice after that, by then you just might get through the confused stage and open up to it's beautiful simplicity.
Advantages: There was 1 decent fight scene I think? Disadvantages: Just plain boring.
...night and watched it with my house mates who also thought the film was terrible.
I wanted to finish the film just due to thinking, maybe it will get better.. but it didn't. It dragged on and on, and we eventually turned it off before turning it on.
I have decided that the reviews on the box must have been written by some "artistic type" who likes these weird films for the sake of them being weird.
I do not recommend this film. ...

Advantages: Very artistic/unique, Fantastic acting from River Phoenix Disadvantages: Can be hard to follow at times
MyOwnPrivateIdaho is about the friendship between two hustlers, Scott (Keanu Reeves) and Mike (River Phoenix). Scott is the son of a high-ranking family, and spends his life deliberately embarrassing his father. He claims that his rebellion is only temporary. Mike is gay and in love with Scott. He sufferes from narcolepsy, and is obsessed with finding his mother who abandoned him as a baby. Together, they embark on a Journey to find Mike's mother, travelling from Portland to Idaho to Italy. The movie is based on Shakespeare's Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 (a young man tries to avoid following in his father's footsteps by keeping disreputable company) and Henry V (after the father's death, the young man abandons his carousing friends, becomes respectable, goes to a European country where he doesn't speak the language and brings back a wife ...
