I have a passion for musicals. So much expression and passion can come out of a song. It helps you feel what their feeling and it's really enjoyable to watch.
This film, My Fair Lady, is a classic. Starring in this are two brilliant actors, Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. They are absolutely wonderful in their characters and you know no-one else could ever have done their parts justice.
I am a romantic. I always have been and I love films like this. It is a story of common flower girl Eliza, who gets by selling flowers to passers by on the street. She dreams of better things singing 'Wouldn't it be Loverly'.
One day she is overheard by a professor, Professor Higgins who is taking notes on what she is saying. He is a professor of speach and can place anyone to where they where from within a few streets. He is disgusted with her speech being the filth of the streets, dropping H's everywhere. Saying 'ooow' and 'gaaan'. He proclaims to the people around and to the friend he was going to meet Colonel Pickering that he could turn this squashed cabbage leaf into a duchess. Joking about it then, he gets a knock at his door from Eliza asking for lessons so that she may become the duchess he boasted that he could turn her into. He takes on this challenge put forward buy Colonel Pickering. Pickering, Higgins and Eliza have fun and trying times. They become very good friends. The movie is about the lessons and the amazing transformation that takes place.
Audrey Hepburn managed to pull off the dirty common girl really well despite the fact that she's beautiful and classy. She looks really lovely in the white dress at the ball. I'd love to try that dress on myself but alas I'm not not that tall and skinny.
Rex Harrison plays Professor Higgins. The self confessed batchelor. He plays the male chauvinist and really makes all us women get the daggers out for him when he sings 'Why can't a woman, be like a man'. He doesn't sing his songs really, he talks them but it still works.
This film makes me cry and laugh. Higgins and Eliza show that they both have something that the other needs. My favourite scene is where Eliza is at Higgins mother's house. If you haven't seen it I don't want to spoil it for you so I'll leave it there.
The music is all great. The most touching songs for me is where we see a sensitive side to the professor. This comes at the very end of the film '...I've grown accustomed to her face..'. Other songs include
Wouldn't it be loverly I could have danced all night I'm getting married in the morning Here on the street where you live
and others. It's great music.
This film is winner of 8 academy awards including Best picture. Thoughly deserved as far as I'm concerned. Adapted from a book by Alan Jay Lerner, this story is perfect and although you want to see more at the end, it gives you enough to know what happens. That makes it the classic that it is. It is directed by George Cukor. It's running time is 167 minutes making this quite a long film. It is rated U and is a lovely family film. I definitely recommend this film.
