As you may have guessed this film is mainly about Greece and it's culture but it isn't done in the way of a documentary but a comedy. Toula Portokolas is a 30 year old woman that works in her family restaurant Dancing Zorba's. Her family are very proud to be Greek, expecially her father Gus who loves to show how every word has originated from the Greek language, even if he has to make it up basically to say that without Greece there would be no English language. Her father also thinks that a Greek woman must do three things in life which are getting married to a Greek man, making Greek babies and to feed everyone until the day she dies.
Toula had been single for 30 years and it didn't look like anything was going to change in a hurry. Her dad invited lots of different Greek men to the house hoping that finally she would like one of them but it didn't happen. A member of her family then tells her that her appearance resembles that of an old woman. This then makes her change her looks by wearing younger clothes, contact lenses and make-up. She also then takes a course on computers and tourism and asks her aunt for a job at her travel agency. Her aunt lets her get the job and she doesn't have to work at the restaurant anymore.
While working at the restaurant a tall handsome stranger had walked in but he only stayed for about 5 minutes and what he saw of her was not great because she just stood there staring at him.At her new work place at her aunt's travel agency she sees him outside and he notices her, she waves then hides in shock. He walks past many times looking for her then he walks in and talks to her. They go out to dinner but he didn't go out with her because she was from the restaurant and he had liked her then . He only realises she is from the restaurant at dinner but he liked her for her looks now not back then when he had seen her at the restaurant.
As the title obviously states there is a big Greek wedding, I'm not sure about the fat part though. This is quite a simple film but still amusing with a good story. I found it a bit fake that Ian Miller, the tall handsome stranger likes her when she really liked him. Also how he asks her out not knowing who she is then he remembers her. The wedding speech at the end is interesting and quite funny. There are not many films based on Greek families so I found this interesting and I got to see what a Greek wedding is like.
The cast are good in this film and they all fit the parts. Joey Fatone from Nsync has a little part. Sex and the City's John Corbett also was good as Ian, a different look for the love interest. Nia Vardalos was a good leading lady, I have never seen her in any films before but I would definitely watch another film of hers.
Overall a great comedy, if you are looking for a movie where you don't have to concentrate or have to take seriously this is it.
