Ok I am actually writing this review over two days, 1. before the film and 2. After the film.
~Released~ This film was released very recently, 20th September 2002. It is certified as PG (so yes, you can take the kids along with you-should you want to of course) and directed by Joel Zwick (with some input by Tom Hanks).
~Pre-Thoughts~ Well I first saw the trailer for the film whilst at the Odeon cinema with Pete watching Insomnia (and my god is that a bad film). The trailer was pretty simple showing the female character that fell in love (American Love story then?) with an American man (Aiden from Sex in the city). The trailer quickly revealed the fact that she was from a Greek family (sooooo that’s why it’s called My Big Fat Greek Wedding). She introduces him to the GREEK family…for those of you who don’t know Greek people they are truly hyper and I suspect she’s getting used to the Greek culture, they dance about etc. so from what I’ve seen so far it is based on that simple romantic comedy storyline.
~Actors~ Nia Vardalos (Toula): She is a “nobody”
as such. I saw her promoting the film on GMTV and she seemed genuinely funny and down to earth. She actually wrote the film herself and decided to star in the film to which does not occur too often unless of course the writer is a big headed.
John Corbett (Ian): He has previously been seen as Aiden from Sex in the City but this time he appears with what I can only describe as long stragerly hair (much preferred the 2nd time he appeared as the reformed Aiden in Sex and The City.)
Joey Fatone (Angelo-the cousin): If you happen to think, “yeah he’s familiar” it’s because he’s from Nsync the American boy band. Joey actually got the part fairly. After the play of my big fat Greek wedding was spotted and decided to be made to a film he heard about auditions and went down just like the others-and obviously got the part!
The other key cast are: (I don’t really know these actors’ backgrounds) Michael Constantine (Gus) Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula) Louis Mandylor (Nick Portokalos)
~The Film~ So Mum and I decided to go to watch the film (obviously it so looks like a girly film, not something we wanted to drag my dad along to). We turned up at the Odeon (arguing along the way as usual about how late we were going to be-even though the tailors last for 15 minutes pre film). We got our tickets and headed straight for the big screen. Again argued about where to sit and moved at least three times. Finally settled down with a packet of Revels (bought pre film-from the supermarket.)As suspected we were faced with another 15-20 minutes worth of trailers.
~The Storyline~ My Big Fat Greek Wedding is based on the Greek Portkalos family (oh and there are so many of them.) They originally lived in Greece but emigrated to America (Chicago to be exact). Toula is the main character, she is the ultimate geek of the family, slightly overweight, terribly dressed and can’t find a man, which is why, when Ian turns up in front of her one day she makes a complete prat out of herself. (How real is that?? We all do this right? Or is it just me?)
Anyway Toula decides that it is time for an image revamp. She changes her hair, clothes, adds a pair of nifty contact lenses (looses the unfortunate glasses) and enrols on a course. She looks totally different for the better and her family notice it too. Much to their annoyance she is getting old (30) and has still failed to find a good Greek man to marry!
*By this point in the film mum and me are chatting away much to the annoyance of the couple sitting in front of us!!! This made us remensise to Bridget Jones’ Diary whereby mum though she was me all over, she now decided I was Toula (cheers Mum).*
Mr Right (aka. Ian) finally asks her out but there is one problem, he is not Greek. Gus and Maria do everything possible to get her together with a greek man (this is the funny bit, some of those men are vile) but of course she is stuck on Ian. Ian is ever so sweet as he gets baptised so the family finally accept him. There are a few funny bits to follow including the veggie bit and meeting of his parents (but I don’t want to spoil them for you).
It ends like this……….(yeah right you’ll only scream at me if I tell you-but it’s not exactly hard to work out if you think of the name!) All I will say is that it involves a hell of a lot of Greek people and a nasty spot!!!!
We were in the cinema for about two hours and the film lasts 95 minutes. It is a good 95 minutes where you can chat and everyone is giggling away!
~My Opinion~ This film made me crack up; it’s definitely one you should go to watch with your mum or a best mate. Reason why is because they won’t hesitate to tell you how much you are like Toula and no doubt you will get renamed Toula. The best thing of the film is the bit that makes it funny, the Greek family. There are a lot of them and they always do everything together which just makes you crack up.
I would highly recommend everyone to watch this (even the blokes).
