potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 2 contains the following episodes: "The Meaning of Death". A plague that kills mutants forces Adam to work with Mason Eckhart and the invulnerable mercenary Marlowe in the knowledge that any cure he comes up with will lead to a double-cross. "Lit Fuse". Brennan is attracted to energy-absorbing Ashley, who is being set up for betrayal by bounty-hunter Cross. When she absorbs Brennan, things get really complicated. "In the Presence of Mine Enemies". Jesse's hacker girlfriend Toni is forced by Eckhart to betray Adam's hideout Sanctuary and the computerised journalist Proxy Blue. Can the tables be turned? "Crime of the New Century". Youthful mutant firestarter Joshua is kidnapped, rescued and then turned over to the GSA by a renegade FBI agent. "Dark Star Rising". The survivors of a commando team have been altered into mutancy by scientists and want vengeance for their dead squad members. Mutant X helps them stop Eckhart getting the secret serum. The DVDs also contain trailers, a feature on the elaborate stunts and interviews with stunt coordinator Paul Rapovski, show runner Howard Chaykin and Victor Webster (Brennan). --Roz Kaveney

Advantages: Entertaining enough Disadvantages: A bit disappointing
...their uniqueness to become human.
X-Men and X-2 were superior films in every way, this one relying on run of the mill battle sequences that leave you a bit cold. There is no question that the cast fit into their mutants suits beautifully now, each one so familiar it would be hard to imagine them in any other role, but it doesn't deviate from the fact that the film is an empty vessel that lacks the soul of the first two installments. Perhaps the exit of Bryan Singer (who was away doing other superhero turkey of the year "Superman Returns") is the reason, but given his own aforementioned product's emptiness and plodding reliance on how it looks, I would suggest that the mutants have ran their course, and anything after X-2 was never going to be worth the bother. That said, it isn't a complete let down. There is plenty of entertainment on show...

Advantages: The first is good the sequel is even better Disadvantages: Second may be a little long for some
...Wow. Simply wow. Call me backwards but after catching bits of X-Men on TV quite some time ago I didn't think anything of it, but then when I received X-Men 2 as a gift and watched that I had to rush out and buy X-Men to watch it properly. And boy was it good. Now I mean call me backwards because of the order I watched the films in, not because I thought X-Men was geeky.
But if X-Men is still geeky then call me a geek, but the comic and cartoon series going Hollywood has set it on the map as a credible franchise. Both films are 12 certificates, with the sequel being just over 2 hours compared to the first 100 minutes. Where to start? The beginning.
X-Men. X-Men 1. Here we are introduced to Wolverine, who just so happens to be the most recognisable X-Man so it was a good place for the director to start. He is still trying to put...

Advantages: Lots of Marvel heroes Disadvantages: Elektra is not a great film
...X Men
'X-men' follows the conflicts and struggles that mutants must face from mankind. Professor Charles Xavier is one such mutant that wishes to help mutants who are unable to understand their gifts. The villain of the story is Magneto, a very powerful mutant, who thinks that a war is approaching between man-kind and mutants. Stunning action and good performances all round....
X Men 2X2 sees the mutant mansion invaded by a William Striker who has a personal vendetta against all mutants, and plots to destroy all of them. Magneto is back with a scheme of his own that involves the death of all mankind. It's up to our mutant hero's to save the day. Better than the first, the individual character stories are more in-depth and special effects have been stepped up enough to make this a cracking comic book movie.
