Mutant is released under the "Hollywood" Dvd collection. These DVD's were most popular when DVDs were first starting to take over videos but were still priced considerably higher. These cheaper DVDs were around half the price but it does show in the movies. With action movies, such a low budget release would be forgotten but low budget horror movies have a much better quality and are far more entertaining. Mutant was released in a 3 DVD Hollywood boxset along with "Beyond the door 2" and "The grim reaper". Although it could be argued that "The grim reaper" was a scarier film, "Mutant" is far more entertaining. The story is simple enough, 2 brothers are travelling on holiday when they crash at a small redneck town. They expect to stay just the night but they start to uncover something sinister that is causing people to become ill and mutate into toxic zombie things. The creatures themselves look just like the zombies in the original "Dawn of the dead", covered in blue face paint with blackened eyes and this makes the film all the more enjoyable. It is well filmed and they havn't made the terrible mistake of spending all their budget on one explosion or car crash. It looks like they invested a fair bit into the filming and editing as well as the actors. The acting isnt oscar worthy but that makes the movie a litle more funny. Having said that, i definately couldn't say it was bad. It keeps your attention throughout, your interested in what will happen rather than just waiting for another attack or explosion. I can't remember the soundtrack but don't think their were any songs used, just the usual "eerie" horror movie music. This is certainly a film to watch with a few friends but it is still enjoyable on your own. It's one of the best qualtiy low budget movies i have seen. There arn't any particularly gruesome moments but you do get a few cool bits where people are mutated. I would think of this as a 15 instead of an 18 because there isn't any bad language or gory bits. It's surprising to see it is a 1983 film beacause i thought it was a 90's film by the general look. To conclude, it's very enjoyable and i would reccomend it to any fan of horror movies. It is a good hour and a half of cool toxic mutant footage.
