High Society
Advantages: The characters, the music and the script
Disadvantages: None
High Society needs to be seen even if its just for the timeless 'what a swell party' scene with the legends that are Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. It is not often these two greats sing together "we sing so rare." Juile Andrews at her best.
Advantages: This will make you smile, and cry.
Disadvantages: you will get sick of it after 1000 plays.
...and sat with her through the entire movie.
I have to admit this re-release of the classic is so much better on dvd. You get surround sound to "the hills are alive with music". The picture is sharper and with subtitles on you can use it for kareoke! - final I can sing "do ray me" backwards.
If you like any Juile andrew movies this has got to be a must, the singing is supurb, being one of the best musical films ever made.

The Hills are Alive in this DVD
Advantages: Oscar winning movie, great singing, scenery, story
Disadvantages: None
The Sound of Music is probably my favourite film of all time and if like me, you love to watch it over and over again then this DVD is definitely for you.
It is a two disc 40th anniversary collector's edition of the Rogers and Hammerstein classic. The movie won 5 academy awards in all, including best picture.

The Sound That Lingers
Advantages: excellent ensemble, beatifully crafted songs, wholesome family entertainment
Disadvantages: none that I can think of
This should be on the top of all musical classics!
The Sound of Music (SoM) released in 1965 remains to this day an unrivaled film masterpiece by Robert Wise infused by the original music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. I want to be in America!
Advantages: great singing and dancing, plenty of extras!
Disadvantages: depending on viewer, could be too long.
West Side Story is without doubt one of the finest musicals ever!
