A Great Sonic and Emotional Experience
Review of U2 - Elevation 2001 - Live In Boston DVD by
fmml
Advantages: Great concert; great music.
Disadvantages: Slightly gimmicky extra features.
This is a great concert - Elevation was one of U2's most emotional, visceral tours, where the songs were out in the open, not hidden by any artifice or stage personas, and this DVD reflects something of that.
The setlist is nicely structured, leading up to the emotional and sonic climax of the Bad-Streets transition. (Although what's with pronouncing it 'Shtreets', Bono?) Other gems include the relatively rare performance of In a Little While, dedicated ... ...Having the second DVD with alternative angles and so on is a bit gimmicky, to be honest. The biggest downside is that you can't go fullscreen with these angles - you have to watch it all within the interface they give you, which spoils the experience somewhat. It's quite cool to be able to hear the director's instructions to his cameramen and discover that the filming of In a Little While is a bit weird for a reason, though!
All in all, a great ...

WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME
Review of U2 - Rattle And Hum DVD by
little_red_hen
Advantages: U2 in all their glory, raw and gritty!
Disadvantages: Interviews are not particularly helpful
...not actually a fan of U2 until I saw this documentary film on TV. I quite liked a few of their previous songs, after seeing U2 perform on 'THE TUBE', a music programme in the early 80s. Being married at the time to a U2 fan, meant that U2 was blasted out most days, and I finally got the message! From here I worked forward enjoying follow up releases, such as 'Achtung Baby' and 'Zooropa' and working back via 'The Joshua Tree' to the 'Unforgettable ... ...join a band. U2 started to have success in the 1980s, and they haven't looked back since. Since the release of their album The Joshua Tree they have often been referred to as the biggest rock band in the world by both fans and critics. Their music is mostly self penned, with lyrics usually by Bono.
U2 are almost as well known for their humanitarian work as they are for their music. Bono is perhaps the best-known advocate for finding a cure for AIDS ...

Live 8 - Changing the World
Review of Live 8 (Various Artists) (Digipack And Booklet) by
leebo87
Advantages: A day of History on DVD. Loads of really good artists live.
Disadvantages: No commentary and some of the extra's are a bit weak.
...names in music today performing live for your viewing pleasure. Its a bit like a compilation CD, but only you can see the artists performing live and the atmosphere from the crowds watching is electric and pulses through you as you watch. Its hard to explain in words how this show makes you feel. If you were there then you can reminisce of memories of the show you reember and the feeling you had when you were there. If (like me) you weren't there ... ...you can watch it all live now and still say that you were part of something big and helping the world.
Back to the DVD. Its crammed full of performances on each disk. All in great quality (audio and visual) and are produced and captured very well. You turn off the lights, pull the curtains across, whack on the surround sound and you will feel like you are there in the crowd. The atmosphere is captured very well.
The extras on the dvd are imho a ...

Review of Live Aid (Various Artists) (Box Set) by
Superdadof1
Advantages: Great memories of a great day
Disadvantages: None
...date was yes it was Live Aid, I was 16 at the time sadly I didn't get to go there as it was down in London (Wembly Stadium), but I got to watch it all on the Television. It started in London at Midday, USA joined in at Midday their time which was around 5pm our time UK ended at 10pm then USA took us through to around 4am next day what a spectacular show it was. Now at that time Video Recorders were fairly new to the world and our house didn't have ... ...last year when they released Live Aid the DVD. Live Aid was the creation of Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and it came about after they had recorded the original Band Aid song "Do They Know It's Christmas" which was created after Bob and Midge saw a BBC news report about the famine in Africa. Do They Know It's Christmas to this day is still the biggest selling single of all time and featured bands such as Duran Duran, Bananarama, Wham and acts such as ...

Hello Hello... at a place called Vertigo
Review of U2 - 2005 Vertigo - Live From Chicago (Deluxe) by
wildhoney
Advantages: Fantastic quality live show.
Disadvantages: Could feature more insight.
...can mean only thing—a new U2 product has hit the shelves.
U2, no doubt having great success with the multiple versions of 2004's release of "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," have released two versions of the companion live DVD. The regular edition comes packaged with only the concert DVD while the deluxe version includes a second disc with the "Beyond the Tour" documentary, show designer Willie Williams's surveillance cuts and an alternate version ... ...that had the members of U2 sitting down for a candid interview about the tour. Perhaps next time guys?
The extras on the bonus disc are a little disappointing with the exception of the "Beyond the Tour" documentary that includes some great interviews with Vertigo Tour personnel like manager Paul McGuinness, production director Jake Berry, Williams and, most interesting of all, an interview filmed in what appears to be a men's restroom with Gavin ...
