Advantages: The characters, the music and the script Disadvantages: None
High Society needs to be seen even if its just for the timeless 'what a swell party' scene with the legends that are Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. It is not often these two greats sing together "we sing so rare." The great characters are my favourite element of the film, the music comes second and the script which includes some great lines comes third, for instance "shut up you fool" (Louis Calhern with a hangover talking to a bird singing in a ...
Advantages: Great story and acting, catchy songs with good vocals, family film Disadvantages: None from me
Well my film education continues. I think hubby nearly passed out in the shop when I said I had never seen this film and knew nothing about it apart from it being a West end Show! As a result he treated me to it and I have to say considering I did not know what to expect from it I did actually find it very good. The film is set in the 1950’s with Nathan Detroit being a gambling man who is desperately trying to find a venue to host his massive Craps ... ...Gambler comes to town by the name of Sky Masterson who Nathan thinks will be able to help him with his venue problem. Nathan sets Sky up for a $1000 bet that he cannot convince Missionary worker Sarah Brown to go away with him.
Nathan thinks he has won the money as Sky has no chance of getting her too agree so he will be able to pay for the venue for his game but things take a turn for the worse for Nathan when his love suffering fiancé finds out ...
...awe of his achievements. Although Young didn't have much of a chance to show off his acting skills in the role, his looks and good nature do mean that he is very watchable and noticeable in the film. The other is Amy, Laurie's sister, played by Elisabeth Fraser. As the last of the sisters to find a husband, she is understandably upset at being left on the shelf. As an older sister, also unmarried, I could sympathise with her feelings and thought ... ...the film. The theme song, Young At Heart, was a big hit for Sinatra and according to imdb.com it was after the success of the song that the film was named. Two other songs that he sings are Make It One For My Baby (And One More For the Road) and Someone to Watch Over Me. Sinatra sings the former particularly beautifully and with great emotion as he sees Laurie walk into the room. I had forgotten how velvety smooth Sinatra's voice can be and this ...
Advantages: Excellent cast, catchy songs, entertaining storyline Disadvantages: No special features on the DVD
Guys And Dolls is without a doubt one of my favourite musicals ever made! The film was released back in 1955, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and it’s certainly stood the test of time. The general plot is fairly simple; gambler Nathan Detroit who runs the 'oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York' needs $1000 to bribe Joey Biltmore in order to obtain a location to run the floating crap game. In order to obtain the money, Nathan ... ...Nicely Johnson and Big Jule, Guys And Dolls is a classic. The film also has an all-star cast with Frank Sinatra starring as gambler Nathan Detroit, Marlon Brando playing Sky Masterson, Vivian Blaine playing the talented Miss Adelaide and Jean Simmons playing Sargeant Sarah Brown. With Frank Sinatra as part of the cast, obviously you'd expect fantastic vocals, however the well-written lyrics and exceptional choreography boosts Guys And Dolls into ...
Advantages: Six Doris Day movies - what more can i say?! Disadvantages: It doesn't include Calamity Jane

Young At Heart (1955)- musical with Frank Sinatra. A dramatic musical - fantastic songs and performances by Doris & Frank! Lover Come Back (1961)- some of Doris Day's best films are those in which she starred with the gorgeous Rock Hudson. Doris and Rock play business rivals who can't help falling for each other. The Thrill of it all (1963) - Romatic and funny musical starring ... ...me no Flowers (1964) - Doris plays Judy Kimbal, wife of George (Rock Hudson). George thinks he is dying and starts to make plans for his wife's future. However, Judy finds out and thinks he's having an affair!! This is a great comedy full of misunderstandings!
That Touch of Mink (1962) - This is an 'adult sophisticated comedy', starring Doris and Cary Grant (Doris Day sure did work with some amazing people!). Doris wants romance and marraige but ...
