Reviews of Musicals & Music Films »
We're all going on a - oh! you know the rest!
Advantages: A good happy go lucky musical film Disadvantages: By it's nature it's very lightweight
...we all went to see Summer Holiday.
I am guessing that this is the best known of all Cliff's films and if you were to ask a random member of the general population to name a film starring Cliff Richard this is the one that would be named most often. To be fair, of his musical films, this is the arguably the one with the best music.
As I say I first saw the film at the cinema in 1963 when I was just 8 years old. I have since watched it a few times ... ...of course the title song, Summer Holiday!
Incidentally I use the term 'dance' in its loosest sense where Cliff is concerned! Whatever you might think of his singing I think we can agree that he is definitely not a dancer!
The Shadows also appear here and there in the film to play a few tunes and to accompany Cliff. Their most notable instrumental from the film is Foot Tapper.
There are a few incidents which seem to bear no relation to the plot ...

A treasury for Cliff fans and non-fans alike
Advantages: Three Movies in One Set, Fab for Cliff Fans Disadvantages: Each Movie could Support its own disc plus bonus material
...sad day for Britain when Cliff Richard and the gang boogied off of our screens for the last time, but fear not! They are back to a man in this three movie bumper pack.
Yes, Cliff, Una (Stubbs), Melvin (Hayes) and Co once again brighten our screens in 'Summer Holiday', 'The Young Ones' and 'Wonderful Life'. There's nothing to quite compare to the kooky schemes in these movies, be it driving a red double decker from London to Athens, shooting a movie ... ...innocent time.
Filmed before Cliff became the 'Peter Pan of Pop', these three movies show him at his heart-throb best, wooing a succession of beauties (including Susan Hampshire and Laurie Peters) and performing the clean brand of rock n roll that he is, sadly, no longer known for.
The movies are presented well, and are bright, fresh and a joy to watch, if only for the fashion and hairdos. The songs (Summer Holiday, The Young Ones, Every Girl, ...

Moulin rouge is a musical admirers dream
Advantages: Great chemistry between main characters ,feel good film . Disadvantages: The singing throughout the film can get a bit tiresome
In my opinion you must see the film if you like musicals, otherwise you might find the singing a bit off putting .At times the siniging can seem a bit over the top but in general this is what makes the film interesting. It is worth watching just to see the on screen chemistry between Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman they are a great pairing and seem to have good on screen presence allowing you to follow the romantic tale which is played out .
The ...

I'll watch this some more!
Advantages: great family film Disadvantages: none
...remember loving the musical film Oliver! as a child and singing and dancing along to so many of the wonderful songs that accompanied the story. I was also lucky to see the West End production many years ago, long before Andrew Lloyd Webber took an interest with his search for a Nancy and an Oliver in the great series ‘I’d do Anything’. My daughters loved watching the TV shows and started picking up the words to some of the songs. Therefore when I ... ...in our big armchair watching Oliver! Oliver! (made in 1968)is based on the classic novel of Oliver Twist that was written by Charles Dickens. It tells the story of a poor workhouse boy who had the audacity to ask for more of the disgusting gruel that was served to all the boys daily while the workhouse governors were fed roast dinners. As a consequence Oliver is sold to the local undertaker where he is teased about his dead mother. Feeling desperate, ...
