Joseph DVD is entertaining but you need to be a real "Joseph" fan

Advantages: Great songs and a well known storyline.
Disadvantages: Poor sets which made me feel I was watching a school play.

This version of Joseph is fantastic...if you're a Donny Osmond fan. Which is why I watched it in the first place. Otherwise I think it's a disappointing version of an excellent Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice masterpiece. The storyline sticks to the original well known story, with a host of wellknown songs, which in my opinion are well orchestrated and sung by the cast. The sets are cheap and flimsy, and although this is intentional, it didn't add ...
...parts I didn't find terribly funny, although the Pharoah did have me chuckling! The cast fit the parts well, and there isn't a bad performance amongst them, but although I adore Donny, I didn't think he was great in ths role. I think that the songs save this from being a dire tragedy. Having seen the show in local theatres and the West End, I guess this was always going to be a disappointment for me. The music definitely saved this film from being ...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show/ Shock Treatment dvd set

Advantages: rocky horror - Very original, funny, good soundtrack.
Disadvantages: Shock treatment = v poor in comparison to rocky horror. just weird.

I watched the rocky horror picture show at a friend's house and immediately loved it! Whilst looking to buy the DVD for myself, i came across this dvd set, with rocky horror and the added bonus of a related "sequel" to rocky horror called Shock Treatment. I hadn't seen Shock Treatment but thought I'd like it, with it being so closely related and with a lot of the same cast. Firstly, I must say that I loved rocky horror. Despite it being so popular ...
...what they've gotten themselves into, the others sing and dance their way through the film, which includes the legendary "Time Warp". As the film goes on though, feelings of resentment and desire become apparent which leads to some dramatic events! After watching the weird and wonderful rocky horror, I sat down to watch Shock Treatment. This film proved to be quite unmemorable - it was weird, but certainly not wonderful. The main plot is based on ...

Funny Barbara!

Advantages: Barbara's amazing voice, very funny!
Disadvantages: The sequel not quite as good as the original

...the 1968 Oscar Winning musical Funny Girl. This first film follows Jewish girl Fanny Brice as she strives to become a star. Audiences come to love Fanny as she amazes them with her comic antics and her powerful singing voice. As she becomes a major success in her career, her personal life as it's ups and downs. Fanny falls in love with gambler Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif). He romances her and they eventually marry, however this film doesn't have a ...
...voice!! The sequel to Funny Girl is the 1975 film 'Funny Lady' (very original title!). The sequel focusses on Fanny's life after Nick Arnstein. Fanny meets Billy Rose (played by James Caan), who is a song writer and Broadway producer. The pair work together and also become lovers. However, unlike the first film, this film focusses too much on her career rather than her personal life. It's still a good film but does not live up to the fantastic Funny ...

All-Black Version Of Wizard Of Oz

Advantages: The array of legendary stars
Disadvantages: Too much schmaltz!

The Wiz (1978) was a hip, modernised, all-black version of L. Frank Baum's famous fantasy, adventure story, The Wonderful Wizard Of (first published at the dawn of the century). We all know of course that the best version of this famous childrens story will forever be the delightful Judy Garland classic of 1939. Though brave and ambitious, The Wiz in it's favour is a diverse though failed experiment to bring the story into a more contemporary setting. ...
...as Dorothy with the character in this film being a rather neurotic, wet-behind-the-ears 24 year old harlem school teacher who is whisked away in a snow blizzard one night and lands in Oz. I really wanted to like this film being such a huge fan of the diva of all diva's Diana Ross and although Ross is, as always, vocally excellent throughout each film (especially on her spine-tingling delivery of the exalting number, Home) she just was never suited ...
