What a glorious feeling.. Advantages: Catchy, bright, cheerful and surprisingly funny Disadvantages: Its a musical: this will be enough for some Singin' In the Rain (1952) 103 Minutes Dir: Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly. Starring: Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen I should've subtitled this 'I don't like musicals, but' As a rule, I'd give most films where the lead bursts into song a wide berth. For me, a film is credible (and therefore enjoyable) if you can believe in what is unfolding on the screen. How can you suspend belief if the actors suddenly start singing Cole ... ...instance my girlfriend cajoled me to watching 'Rent'. Don't get me wrong: it's worthy, serious stuff, but I had to turn it off after five minutes. Personally, I am no musicals expert. Wouldn't be able to be analyse one on technical details alone. However, if a musical entertains me (like Mamma Mia did), it gets my seal of approval and I'd watch it repeatedly. 'Singin' In The Rain' certainly fits the bill. What a song and dance! Advantages: lovely family film Disadvantages: none ...and none more so than Singin' in the Rain starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. This lovely film has got it all - romance, comedy and lots of great singing and dancing along with a couple of downpours for good measure! I recently received the DVD of this film for my birthday and the other day we all sat down as a family to watch this great film. Even my four year old daughter really enjoyed it! Singin' in the Rain (made in 1952) ... ...Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) are big silent movie stars. However, when the movie production company starts to make talking pictures there is a big problem because it soon transpires that Lina's voice is terrible. No one knows what to do about this until Don meets the beautiful Cathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds). Xanadu...but most don't Advantages: Camp and Cheesy Fun Disadvantages: Crappy story (film only review) On my last trip to Broadway, I was lucky enough (you may think I'm strange) to get tickets to see the stage version of 'Xanadu', lovingly ripped off from the 1980's film, starring Olivia Newton John. I hadn't seen the film before, so didn't really know what to expect, except that I knew how the main 'Xanadu' tune went. Well, I absolutely loved it, it was so bad that it was fabulous! The girl playing the ONJ character was ... ...with 80s retro gusto…anyway, that's another review altogether, what was my point? Oh yes, well, having loved that, we hopped off to Virgin megastore (they're not Zavvi stateside yet, phew) and bought the DVD…and last night we watched it…but, um, it kinda sucked! timless magic,song and dance Advantages: good old fashion musical Disadvantages: kids hate it Two New York Business men are on a relaxing holiday in the Glens of Scotland, Played by Gene Kelly and Van Johnson. While out for a spot of shooting, they become lost, tired and hungry. In an opening in the trees they see, a small village in the mist, thinking they may get directions and something to eat, they cross a small river bridge, to reach the town, with out knowing, they've crossed into a time lapse over the Bridge of the river Doon (Brigadoon). ... ...night they sleep, the following day will be a hundred years later, and if any of its original inhabitants leave the town, they will sleep that night and never wake again. The two Americans of course know nothing of the curse or the village's history, which is a closely guarded secret by the villagers. Hollywood Taster Advantages: A good introduction to some seldom seen films.
