WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME
Advantages: U2 in all their glory, raw and gritty! Disadvantages: Interviews are not particularly helpful
...not actually a fan of U2 until I saw this documentary film on TV. I quite liked a few of their previous songs, after seeing U2 perform on 'THE TUBE', a music programme in the early 80s. Being married at the time to a U2 fan, meant that U2 was blasted out most days, and I finally got the message! From here I worked forward enjoying follow up releases, such as 'Achtung Baby' and 'Zooropa' and working back via 'The Joshua Tree' to the 'Unforgettable ... ...join a band. U2 started to have success in the 1980s, and they haven't looked back since. Since the release of their album The Joshua Tree they have often been referred to as the biggest rock band in the world by both fans and critics. Their music is mostly self penned, with lyrics usually by Bono.
U2 are almost as well known for their humanitarian work as they are for their music. Bono is perhaps the best-known advocate for finding a cure for AIDS ...

High Society
Advantages: The characters, the music and the script Disadvantages: None
High Society needs to be seen even if its just for the timeless 'what a swell party' scene with the legends that are Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. It is not often these two greats sing together "we sing so rare." The great characters are my favourite element of the film, the music comes second and the script which includes some great lines comes third, for instance "shut up you fool" (Louis Calhern with a hangover talking to a bird singing in a ...

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh Yes!
Advantages: It's still good despite being 70 years old, entertaining for children and adults alike Disadvantages: None
...I instead decided to watch the Wizard of Oz, which I was delighted to see was playing on Channel Five. I hadn't seen it since I was a child, but remembered it being an excellent film so was fairly enthusiastic about seeing it again. Since 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of this famous film I thought it would also be interesting to see how well the film had stood the test of time as well as if I still enjoyed it as an adult. I'm assuming that most ... ...won't talk too much about the plot, but I will outline it briefly. The teenage Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle in a small town in Kansas, with her little dog Toto as her best friend and main company. All is well until her dog bites the leg of evil Elmira Gulch, who threatens to take Toto away, so Dorothy runs away with him. A bizarre set of circumstances lead to a tornado threatening Dorothy's town, and she arrives at her house just in time ...

Let's Go Singin' In The Rain
Advantages: Great story, feel good factor, lot's of actions, light hearted, easy to follow Disadvantages: None that I can think of
Singin In The Rain is a fantastic comedy with memorable songs that stick in your mind long after the film has ended. Masterfully created to bring attention to the action within this film. Singin In The Rain is an interesting film that combines dance and movement with musical pieces. It is cleverly written with camera angles and other special effects that make the dancing come to life.
Each actor is able to combine a number of talents including dance, ... ...unlike you see nowadays. The all round performer reflects the time that this film was written because actors were trained then in all areas of performance. For anyone who loves musical type films they will probably love this film and want to add it to their collection. Equally this makes a fantastic gift for the lover of musical films.
If you are feeling down and want something to make you smile then this is the right kind of film to watch. It is ...

Xanadu...but most don't
Advantages: Camp and Cheesy Fun Disadvantages: Crappy story
(film only review)
On my last trip to Broadway, I was lucky enough (you may think I'm strange) to get tickets to see the stage version of 'Xanadu', lovingly ripped off from the 1980's film, starring Olivia Newton John. I hadn't seen the film before, so didn't really know what to expect, except that I knew how the main 'Xanadu' tune went. Well, I absolutely loved it, it was so bad that it was fabulous! The girl playing the ONJ character was ... ...with 80s retro gusto…anyway, that's another review altogether, what was my point? Oh yes, well, having loved that, we hopped off to Virgin megastore (they're not Zavvi stateside yet, phew) and bought the DVD…and last night we watched it…but, um, it kinda sucked!
So, on with the story…Struggling Artist, Sonny (Michael Beck) from the West Coast bumps into a roller-skating girlie, Kira (Olivia Newton John), but then she vanishes. Oh no! He can't find ...
