Advantages: Fun storyline, catchy songs. Disadvantages: N/A
I first watched Bugsy Malone as a kid and I loved it. I suspected I remembered this film through 'rose tinted glasses' so I decided to buy it and watch it again. I'm glad that I did because it was as good as I remembered it. A parody of 'gangster' films and characters, this was a musical film originally released in 1976 which was loosely based on the events during the prohibition era in the United States. All of the characters were played by children ... ...Dandy Dan (Martin Lev) and Bugsy Malone (Scott Baio) who is enlisted to help Fat Sam and his mob overcome Dandy Dan's crew. Dandy Dan has acquired 'splurge' guns and is taking down Fat Sam's mob one by one. Considering the talent displayed by some of the cast, it is amazing that only Jodie Foster (who played Fat Sam's moll and club singer Tallulah) and Scott Baio (Bugsy Malone) went on to achieve notable worldwide success. Bonnie Langford, Dexter ...
Advantages: Amazing music - I found myself singing along. Disadvantages: None. Except maybe I now want one of those pedal cars
I first saw Bugsy Malone when I was in school... so many years ago now and recently had the pleasure of watching it again. And it hadn't lost any of its charm. If anything I enjoyed watching it even more as an adult as I had as a child. It works on so many levels and I think that having had exposure to more "adult" gangster movies like the Godfather and Goodfellas showed you just how perfectly they had caught the nuances of the organised crime culture ... ...run of the roost. And the musical numbers are vastly superior to most musicals I have seen. Great acting from everyone in this movie, as well as a young Jodie Foster, who does an amazing turn as the child equivalent of a gangster's moll. The use of custard pies instead of guns just highlights the absurdity of violence to a completely different level than I have ever seen before in a movie - or maybe I am reading into it too much and it was just a ...
Advantages: A great synopsis of the band's early hits. Good value at £5 Disadvantages: At only 22 minutes long, it comes and goes all too quickly
The Beach Boys are a fascinating band: founded by a prodigal musician and his pushy father, destroyed by family hatred and drugs, and now resurrected as three separate groups.
This concert, filmed in 1964, captures the band at a time of optimism and promise. It features early classics such as 'In My Room', 'Surfin' USA' and 'Fun, Fun, Fun which illustrate the perfect balance of polished harmonies and surf rock that won them such acclaim. There are ... ...it's a good performance all the same, made even better by DVD quality sound. There is also rather nice filler segment on 'how the Beach Boys put together a record'. It's nice to see the band all together doing what they do best before internal conflicts took their toll.
Unfortunately the set is rather short so the concert can only tell part of the Beach Boys story. Greater success would later come with 'I Get Around' and 'Good Vibrations' but it's ...
Advantages: Great chemistry between main characters ,feel good film . Disadvantages: The singing throughout the film can get a bit tiresome
In my opinion you must see the film if you like musicals, otherwise you might find the singing a bit off putting .At times the siniging can seem a bit over the top but in general this is what makes the film interesting. It is worth watching just to see the on screen chemistry between Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman they are a great pairing and seem to have good on screen presence allowing you to follow the romantic tale which is played out .

...remember loving the musical film Oliver! as a child and singing and dancing along to so many of the wonderful songs that accompanied the story. I was also lucky to see the West End production many years ago, long before Andrew Lloyd Webber took an interest with his search for a Nancy and an Oliver in the great series ‘I’d do Anything’. My daughters loved watching the TV shows and started picking up the words to some of the songs. Therefore when I ... ...in our big armchair watching Oliver! Oliver! (made in 1968)is based on the classic novel of Oliver Twist that was written by Charles Dickens. It tells the story of a poor workhouse boy who had the audacity to ask for more of the disgusting gruel that was served to all the boys daily while the workhouse governors were fed roast dinners. As a consequence Oliver is sold to the local undertaker where he is teased about his dead mother. Feeling desperate, ...
