The Music Live At The Blank Canvas
Review of The Music Live At Blank Canvas by
helen666
Advantages: High-energy groove-dance-rock-funk music - fantastic band!
Disadvantages: Mostly their old stuff - I'd like to hear some of their new songs live.
...DVD is of Northern funksters The Music at their 2003 tour's homecoming gig at The Blank Canvas, Leeds. Through the clouds of smoke (dry ice?), coloured lights and oceans of waving arms and flailing crowd-surfers, we see the young dance-rock crew struttin' their groovy stuff across the stage. The first thing that struck me (as I have never seen them live before... hopefully I'll get to see them one day...) was how much their songs sounded like the ... ...etc., but they don't. The Music manage to get futuristic dance music out of 4 boys with guitars! Singer Robert Harvey's voice seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing (like Marmite): unusual, unearthly, unique, unmistakable, and suited to The Music's own brand of dance rock, which seems to be situated somewhere between The Cure ("A Forest" etc.) and mainstream dance music (Bodyrockers, Ibiza music, etc.). It's a voice that wouldn't really be suited ...

Not Your Average Music DVD
Review of Doves - Where We're Calling From DVD by
tac20
Advantages: Interactive, Hidden sections, Great Live Videos
Disadvantages: Expensive, Not one you'll watch over and over
The Doves DVD 'Where We're Calling From' was a surprise acquisition that I won in a very late night competition on the DAB radio station BBC 6 Music. I love the Doves, so I was rather thrilled to get the DVD - and it was certainly exciting when it came through the post in its official BBC packaging!
Appearance
The DVD is very well presented. The case is entirely cardboard except for the plastic sheet that the DVD disc clips into, and it opens ... ...silhouetted against it. The Doves seem to delight in suitably British photos on their albums and this DVD is no exception - proud to present the mundane and ordinary as beautiful and unique.
Inside the inner case there is a full colour photo of mismatched tarmac on a country road (perhaps even A Roman road). The loose booklet in this case shows the underside of a motorway bridge with fireworks in the background (again against an overcast sky) on ...

Let's dance...
Review of David Bowie - The Best Of Bowie DVD by
IanM73
Advantages: Great for any Bowie fan with all the hits
Disadvantages: No special features
...Dolby digital sound.
David Bowie first made his name in 1972 with his glam rock style of music and videos, and the way the 70's were going his music was sure to be a big hit. Sure enough his records appealed to the public as it was a mixture of a different kind of music.
His song "Oh! You pretty things" was a big hit in 1972 followed by many more including "Queen bitch", "Five years", "Starman", "the Jean Genie", "Space oddity" and many more just ... ...UK over to the US.
David continued with his style of Glam rock music until around 1977-78 where his style changed with the rest of the 70's. His style was now more into rock and a mixture of some songs being a mixture of fast and slower paced ones like "Heroes" and "Be my wife"
Yet again when the 80's hit he still kept his style of music but he had the opportunity to make different videos for his songs. His first new hit of the 80's was "Ashes ...

Mamma Mia! How could I resist you?
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by
jeaniecz
Advantages: funny, ful of energy and the great timeless ABBA songs
Disadvantages: bit too silly in places, no really surprising plot turns
...elsewhere, but here in Prague Mamma Mia! has become a symbol of this summer, full of fun, dancing and singing, love, sun, friends, joy and happy ends. It was my first time that sitting in the cinema I would feel all the ppl there shared sth and created such a happy and cheerful atmosphere like this time when everybody sang along to the songs.
Cast
Meryl Streep - Donna
Amanda Seyfried - Sophie
Pierce Brosnan - Sam
Colin Firth - Harry
Stellan ... ...I think her performance of Mamma Mia! was the best song in the whole movie and the little show she gave with Christine Baranski and Julie Walters as The Dynamos was sheer fun, without any depth, but fun. As Streep herself said: "I'm really doing this to embarass my 20-sth-year-old children. The dancing will mortify them and they'll have to move to Alaska or some place like that." Streep's duet of The Winner Takes It All with Pierce Brosnan felt a ...
