MAMMA MIA - review from a Musical Novice
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by runningman77

Advantages: Bright, loud and alot of fun
Disadvantages: Musical purists will not be impressed.

A bit of backstory first... Me and my other half often disagree and bicker about the movies we see. Our preferences are along traditional gender lines: ME - action movies, something intellectual or a bit juvenile will normally hit the spot. HER - something girlie: kookie or romantically inclined. She has seen Twilight 4 times and counting... Case in point was Juno,se loved it whilst I fell asleep halfway through! Never before could people be ...
...to grease the wheels slightly (and to earn a few brownie points into the bargain) I opted to see a film of her choice. "How about a musical?" I asked - "there's that adaption of the West End show with all the Abba songs in it." Now, for me a musical is something for theatrically minded ladies (and gents); the idea of someone bursting into song for no apparent reason is an anathema. It just does NOT compute. Still, Im always open to new experiences ... Read review

Fabba!
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by mummy2harry

Advantages: Great songs, well cast, enjoyable, fun, a great tribute to a great band and musical
Disadvantages: None!

...and one of these was Mamma Mia. I had wanted to see it at the cinema but never got around to it, so I got it for myself for a treat with an Amazon voucher when it first came out. I never managed to see it, so was determined to do so at Christmas! Well, I've been so tired every evening that I've been in bed too early to watch a film, but tonight I put it on at 8pm as I really wanted to see the bloomin' thing at last! And was it worth the wait? Mamma ...
...the film, from title song Mamma Mia, to Dancing Queen, to lesser known Honey, Honey and Slipping Through my Fingers which was an amazing emotional performance from Meryl Streep...I was welling up throughout that song! It modernises the classic hits but keeps the feeling of nostalgia, and you just cannot stop yourself singing along because its so catchy! The cast all have great voices and do all of the songs justice, none more so than the wonderful ... Read review

Thicker Than Water
Review of Jack Johnson - Thicker Than Water DVD by murk

Advantages: screenpaly, soundtrack, content
Disadvantages: none

Jack Johnson is a surfing obsessed filmmaker/ musician. He has a very raw down-to-earth style in making his movies, documentaries and his music. He travel around the world with his surfing friends to experience and surf spots from different locations. "Thicker Than Water" is one the very first films he made with the help of some of his friends.. It's a surfing documentary about how he with some of the surfing icons traveled to find and surf different ...
...first ones to surf. The film shows how they toured, the transport they used, people they met, their experiences.. It's not just pure surfing in it. It's more about finding surf and their experiences. This film has a very different feel. It's a documentary yet it feels like a real movie. There are numerous voice overs, like an interview of the rider on the background while his run or a scene he's in is being played. Screen goes sepia or gray scale ... Read review

Mamma Mia! The DVD -- My Review
Review of Mamma Mia! DVD by tobymather

Advantages: great fun, good singing, dancing and acting
Disadvantages: a bit cheesy, some weak performances

The DVD version of Mamma Mia has been produced beautifully, recreating something that was so magical on the big screen that people feared it would scale down to DVD badly. They were wrong. Starting with the casing, you know that you are in for a great experience with Mamma Mia! The great photo on the front of the case speaks of fun filled Grecian escapades. The DVD offers not only the choice of play, special features, subtitles, language etc., but ...
...family. The plot of Mamma Mia! is good, considering the musical was written for the songs, not the songs for the musical. Converted from the plot of the stage version, the film version is good enough to be memorable and keep you interested. Songs generally fit the story, and the idea of a girl searching for her true father is not only a good one, but also very relevant in an age of teenage pregnancies. The plot is also full of cheeky fun: younger ... Read review

Tum Bin - worth watching
Review of Tum Bin (Hindi Language) by imwhoever

Advantages: story, story development, music, cinematography
Disadvantages: non

Tum Bin is a classic example of low budget romantic movie. It was not much advertised before release so when I saw first time I was completely unaware of story, artists, music etc. Once I finished it, I immediately added in one of my favourite movies I have ever seen. Its a story between 3 actors and 1 actress with extra ordinary music tracks and amazing direction by Anubhav Sinha. It was shooted in Canada so has some beautiful backgrounds. Story ...
...Bapat) accidental death in India, Canada-based Shah Industries is on the verge of collapse.
