...favourite films of all time South Pacific.......yes, I know, I'm a soppy romanticist! !
I first saw this film as a teenager and was hooked, in fact I was so hooked that life thereafter was a downer. I was convinced that one day I would sail off to the South Pacific and meet a handsome man who would sweep me off my feet in much the same way as Joe Cable did to Liat, swinging her from side to side and singing "younger than springtime"........no it's ... ...review of the film.
South Pacific is set in the Second World War. It is supposed to be l943 at a time when a U.S.navy base is set up in the Solomon Islands ready for an invasion towards New Quinea. One of the heroes is Joe Cable (my screen idol for many years after)
who has been sent to one such island on a special mission. The plot progresses and Joe Cable falls in love with a Polynesian girl Liat who is the daughter of Bloody Mary, a hideous ...
Advantages: great musical score, sweet plot Disadvantages: possibly too dated for modern sensibilities

Review of Gigi (DVD)
King Creole,
Is possibly my favourite of all the Elvis movies, it really shows Elvis at his best, a young raw talent. maybe not the best actor the world has ever known, but a breath glimse at a talent that had the world all shook up.
The film was made before Elvis put to much faith in the scandolous colonel Tom Parker.
Quite a dark dramatic movie for Elvis compared to the more cheesy romantic beach slush that was churned out at later dates.
In ... ...a struggling singer who has a knack for ending up on the wrong side of the law and a nasty habit for brawling.
coming to terms with the death of his mother, Danny vows not to get into any more trouble and manages to land a gig singing at a hip nightclub in the French Quarter of New Orleans for local mobster Maxie Fields played by (Walter Matthau), who soon demands that Danny performs exclusively for him.
But Danny starts to take a shine to Fields ...
Advantages: Great chemistry between main characters ,feel good film . Disadvantages: The singing throughout the film can get a bit tiresome
In my opinion you must see the film if you like musicals, otherwise you might find the singing a bit off putting .At times the siniging can seem a bit over the top but in general this is what makes the film interesting. It is worth watching just to see the on screen chemistry between Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman they are a great pairing and seem to have good on screen presence allowing you to follow the romantic tale which is played out .

...remember loving the musical film Oliver! as a child and singing and dancing along to so many of the wonderful songs that accompanied the story. I was also lucky to see the West End production many years ago, long before Andrew Lloyd Webber took an interest with his search for a Nancy and an Oliver in the great series ‘I’d do Anything’. My daughters loved watching the TV shows and started picking up the words to some of the songs. Therefore when I ... ...in our big armchair watching Oliver! Oliver! (made in 1968)is based on the classic novel of Oliver Twist that was written by Charles Dickens. It tells the story of a poor workhouse boy who had the audacity to ask for more of the disgusting gruel that was served to all the boys daily while the workhouse governors were fed roast dinners. As a consequence Oliver is sold to the local undertaker where he is teased about his dead mother. Feeling desperate, ...
