This is a film which I have wanted to see for some time but never really got around to it. Hubby made the last film choice which was shocking so this was my choice and I thought he would not like it is it is a chick flick but I was completely surprised when he actually enjoyed all of it.
The film is about Alex Fletcher who was in a famous pop group from the 1980’s but in the present day he is struggling to keep his fame and music contacts. He is shocked when his manager tells him that the latest pop sensation is wanting him to write her a song , Alex thinks this could be his big break back into the music scene so sets about writing one.
He is in his apartment when he gets a visit from Sophie Fisher who is calling to water the plants as the usual girl is on holiday. As Alex and a friend are trying to write some lyrics she is overhear singing along and coming up with better lyrics. Alex’s friend is not happy that she is writing better words than him so he leaves. Alex now asks Sophie to stay and help him write this
song but she refuses as she does not think she would be able to do it.
Will Alex be able to convince Sophie to help him write this song and will it ultimately get Alex his fame status back and get him back in the charts?
I am so glad that I finally got around to watching this film as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hugh Grant played the role of Alex Fletcher and I thought that he did a very good job with his character. In the parts where he was singing I found his vocals to be quite good but he sounded very weak, I think f he would have had a little more confidence then his vocals would have been much better. I did enjoy seeing him at the start of the film supposedly in his 1980’s pop group, his costume and dancing was very funny. Drew Barrymore played the role of Sophie and I thought that she too did a great job and made her character very likable. Both Hugh and Drew worked very well together and three was a lovely chemistry between them both.
The supporting actors in the film were all very good and I did find there were a lot of faces which I recognised even though they were not very famous actors or actresses, I think this added to the film as there was no real expectation from them and they did not take anything away from the two main characters. The character of Sophie’s sister did bring a lot of humour to the film as she was a complete fan of Alex Fletcher and is Pop group. This did cause a few good laughs.
The storyline was good and believable and I did find though it was a bit predictable and both me and hubby had worked the ending out after only watching about the first half hour but this did not really bother either of us and it was still nice to watch.
The music in the film was very good and I did like some of the old 80’s songs which were played and also the current tracks. I think this added a lot to the film. The film was set in the present day so not much time and effort was needed for the settings and costumes and they all did look very nice and fitted in well with the story. I did find the shots which were supposed to have been from the 80’s looked authentic and the costumes were great and they certainly showed what crazy clothes people used to wear!
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
Additional Scenes Gag reel Note for Note - The making of Music and Lyrics PoP! Goes My Heart Music Video
I do not really have any interest in additional features so have not watched any of these.
The running time of this film is 100 minutes which I found to be just right as any longer and they would have made the story drag on but as it was this length it did keep moving at a good pace throughout. The certificate on this film is a PG as there is only one mild use of language and sex references and I do completely agree with this.
This DVD is available in Tesco for just £3 but I managed to pick it up on EBay for just £1.50 which I thought was a bargain.
I do recommend this film as it has a good story, good acting and does not take much brain power to watch. Even hubby found he enjoyed this film so it is not just one for the women!
