Music and lyrics works because it is so undeniably, crushingly, overwhelmingly, intoxicatingly.... lovely. There is a stigma attatched to the romantic comedy genre (some may say fairly, I would argue not) that makes people think that it is one of little or no merit to a serious movie goer - but this film embodies everything that is good about the genre... its sweet, emotional, intellegent and actually has something to say about growing-up, learning to trust and finding solice in the most unlikely of places. And yes it follows the well beaten path and yes you may know whats going to happen and when – but its done with such amount of humanity and charm (and Barrymore and Grant are so unbeliveably excellent together) that you just wont care... because you’ll be too wrapped up in the melodic whimsy of it all.
First and foremost Music and Lyrics is a film about romance and how you find it in the strangest and most unlikely of places. It completely succeeds as a romance because the central relationship is surprisngly mature and unhollywood. The two leads feel like real people – with real emotional baggage, real fears and dreams and that makes the whole thing so much more resonant than the usual run of the mill fluff that the movie industry inflicts on us. You want them to get together, because they make each other better people and take each other places that they couldn’t get by themselves. And through their interactions they both wrestle some inner demons and help each other move on from past mistakes... its an unusually emotive partnership for a contemporary Hollywood rom-com and the whole film floats gracefully on it. And when they argue it is heartbreaking and when they get together it really is cause for joy and its never made fluffy by unnessecary silliness or frenetic MTV stupidity. The film allows the relationship to take its time and trusts the audience to have an attention span so builds to a mature and unexpectedly emotional finale. Which is feel-good without being stupid and feels like an intellegent and well thought-out ending to the story – it dosn’t offer any easy answers and leaves the film on a high and the audience with a spring in their step.
Drew Barrymore reminds me of the irrepressible Lucille Ball with her deft comedic skill and deeply human appeal. She plays the screwball love intrest better than anyone in recent memory and here shows her trade mark charm and lovable vulnerabilty with flair and surprising emotional substance (the fact that she’s truly gorgeous doesn’t hurt). At times truly funny and at others achingly sad she embodies all the sides of her character She delivers the witty dialouge with charisma and intelligence and has a great chemistry with Grant. And she makes the ending so very touching and pointedly human that you become sad when it finishes, because you want to know where her character is going to go next – now that she has renewed confidence and strength. It turns out that Grant can also put in a mature and funny performance (when not being grateing and irritating like in most of his other films) and plays Alex with plenty of zeal, has an easy bufoon like charm and a wry maturity which he failed to show in previous roles. He plays his character with dead on accuracy and a pleasingly quirky edge that goes well with Barrymore’s comedic stylings. He is believable as a person and he delivers to dialogue with humility and humor and his gives his character a real depth.
The screenplay for Music and Lyrics is cute and catchy without being childish and gracefully toes the line between moving idealism and scoff worthy unrealism. It follows a paint by numbers plot (boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl fall out of love, boy and girl have an emotional reunion) but is given spark by some gems of one liners and a interesting earthiness that weighs the premise (and its dubious plausibility) in the real world. The character development of the piece is the thing that really makes it stand out though- all of the characters (including Sophie’s sister – played to hilarious perfection by Kristen Johnston) feel realistic and go through a journey during the course of the film. And at the heart of the script is a really sweet message – but it never feels preachy or self knowing. It also helps that the music is really good with Way Back into Love at the centre as a sweet and thoughtful ballad with lyrics that perfectly sum up the romance at the middle of the film. ‘I've been hiding all my hopes and dreams away Just in case I ever need them again someday I've been setting aside time To clear a little space in the corners of my mind’ which directly reflects the characters feeling and problems. This is offset by the funny and satirical ‘Welcome To Booty Town’ the pop at Britney ‘Entering Bootytown’ and the 80’s inspired ‘Pop! Goes My Heart.’
Marc Lawrence does his best work with Music and Lyrics turning in a stylish and memorable rom-com that he injects with humor and maturity. He allows the scenes to take their time and raises the chuckle factor surprisingly high with some genuinely hysterical scenes- showing an obvious knack for comedy and an eye for physical gags. He also builds a pleasantly hippy-dippy pace that gently moves the story forward whilst allowing there to be some really sweet and moving sequences that linger beautifully with emotion and humor. He has the emotional and romantic walk around town down to a T (if you don’t know what that is then your obviously not a fan of the rom-com genre) and he just makes everything feel ‘right’ in the film. It’s just a lot of fun and is directed with wit and genuine affection for the characters and the genre as a whole.
Overall if you’re looking for a surprisingly intelligent, moving and fun romantic comedy then this is definitely the one for you. Its well acted, funny, well scripted and resonant with enough rom-com froth for diehard genre fans and enough character development for people who just wish to see a light but great film. 5 stars for a silly romance comedy? Have I gone mad? Well yes and yes – but I am finding it hard to remember a more fun film, a more gently emotional film and a more satisfying, spring-in-your-step inducing finale... so go on give into your romantic side and spend a night with Barrymore and Grant.

...really looks like a naff music promo from the 80s, from the dreadful clothes and haircuts, to the ludicrous dance moves, the cheap effects and the soft-focus close-ups of the band members. Using it over the end credits however is a trifle self-indulgent, even if it provides an epilogue to the story in VH1-style information bubbles. The original music by Adam Schlesinger features some wonderfully tacky-sounding riffs on 80s manufactured pop – all naff rhymes, drum machines and synthesizers. There are shadows of early George Michael in the vomit-inducing ballad Grant croons through and to his credit he does sing all the tracks (not very well, but he tries). The Cora Corman tracks are equally amusing because they sound like plausible candidates for today’s glossy, ...

Advantages: Kristen Johnston is excellent in her role albeit a minor part. Disadvantages: The film just isn't funny, it wasted 100 minutes of my life.
Having heard good things about 'Music and Lyrics' I was really quite looking forward to sitting down and watching it on an evening. I got the popcorn on the ready, set the DVD to play and waited for the credits to roll. As soon as the film began however I knew that I'd wasted my hard earned cash and in paying £4.99 to buy this from Play.com I'd been completely ripped off. Whilst Hugh Grant does come across as an incredibly weak person, I must admit that I do quite enjoy some of his films such as 'About A Boy', 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and to a lesser extent 'Bridget Jones Diary' (although it is entirely over rated).
So what's so bad about 'Music and Lyrics'? Well, the script for a start. Many of the jokes here just fail to make me laugh and ...

Advantages: Some fun 80s moments, Hugh Grant dancing Disadvantages: Lack of romantic chemistry
average romantic comedy, which has some very funny moments, but equally some undeniably poor moments. Which if you hadn't guesses is what I think of "Music & Lyrics", a much advertised romantic comedy which sadly used up all the best bits in the trailer and left nothing else to make you really want to sing its praises.
The basis of the film is nothing more than what every other modern day romantic comedy is, a tale of man meets woman they fall in love but watch out for the turbulence on the way, yawn. But despite this much used and pretty boring theme, the over lying story is in itself reasonably decent. I suppose the film caught my attention because it has a slightly 80s twist to it and the opening sequence in which we watch a music video for a fictional band from the 80s called POP perform one of their hits definitely set the film off ...
Advantages: excellent ensemble, beatifully crafted songs, wholesome family entertainment Disadvantages: none that I can think of
This should be on the top of all musical classics!
The Sound of Music (SoM) released in 1965 remains to this day an unrivaled film masterpiece by Robert Wise infused by the original music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Needless to say, it is perfect for the whole family and for all people, young and old (unless of course, if you don't like a melody-driven music, catchy lyrics, and beautiful story, which is seldom the case for "normal" humans).
The DVD preserved the music that inspired many generations the world over. From "Do Re Mi" to "My Favorite Things" to "Edelweiss" and many others. These are classics on their own. Interlaying these wonderful songs to the engaging storyline (that centered on the impending take-over of Austria by Hitler's Nazi) provided a unique viewing experience.
Wise's direction was simply marvelous along ...

DVD Description
Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former '80s pop idol who turns down an offer to appear on a reality TV show for has-beens. Instead, he chooses to play the far more dignified nostalgia circuit, and hires the lovely but deeply insecure Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) to water his plants while he’s away. When Alex is tasked with writing a song for pop starlet Cora (Haley Bennett) in just four days, Sophie reveals herself to be a gifted songwriter and they end up making beautiful music together. Despite this contrived set-up, the film, to its credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com clichés in favour of organic, character-driven conflicts and comedic situations. As Alex and Sophie fall in love, their relationship begins to mirror the song writing process; they grapple with their creative differences and emotional hang-ups, all the while dealing with the pressures of the music industry. The two leads (aided by great supporting turns from Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston) manage to pull all this off with a lightness of touch that makes the characters' vulnerability appealing rather than pathetic.
