guitars, keys and drum riffs that hark back to the days of 1970s prog-rock.Hullaballoshows them at their best, within an energetic live performance of the kind that first drew them to the public and media's attention. Filmed towards the end of their intense 2001 tour at Le Zenith, Paris, this gig is full of high-powered chords and dramatic instrument torture as the lads pump through songs from their three albums including tracks from the B-side albumHullaballo, released to coincide with the DVD.From "Sunburn" and "New Born" to the finale of "Bliss", the band powers through a 90-minute set filmed from a multitude of angles. The montage of audience vs stage action offers not so much a sense of being at the gig in person, more an omnipresent sensation, getting up close and personal with the band while being hit by an onslaught of colours and split frames. The camera does tend to fall out of focus on occasions, but this just complements the raw sound of the gig. 2001 was not just Muse's year but the year when British rock gained a much-needed injection of energy after years of indie shoegazing. On the DVD:Hullaballois offered with a DTS or Dolby 5.1 surround sound, which can only lead to one thing: air guitar in the living room. Along with the 16:9 picture format, this DVD really does blow you away with the sheer power of the band's live performance. Disc one offers the concert footage along with track listings allowing you to flip to your favourite song. Disc two offers a selection of extra features and footage. The worst of these is the 40-minute film on the band's on and off-stage shenanigans, which looks as if a film student had just found a "cool" new feature on his digital camera (though the superb impression of Slipknot is not to be missed). The "Discography" is truly unique as it doesn't just list the albums, it also plays excerpts. The "Front Cover" section offers a host of magazine cover shots showing just how far the threesome have come in the past year; not just in Britain but across the world. --Nikki Disney

Filmed in October 2001, Hullabaloo features Muse's famous performance at Le Zenith in France. The DVD was recorded from footage taken over two nights and merged together to create a concert which without knowing beforehand, feels like one gig on it's own.
It's worth noting that there are NO songs from Absolution on this DVD. Absolution was released two years after the filming and the songs are from OOS and Showbiz. Also, look out for the fantastic "Dead Star" and "In Your World" which were released as a double A side. They never found their way on to a studio album, and the live performances on this DVD make you wonder why. They're both incredible songs and some of Muse's finest work to date.
When i first watched this concert though, i was a little disappointed. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the performance itself. Matt, Chris and Dom are in top form throughout. However, the camerawork is so frenetic that it would be no exaggeration to suggest that the pictures skips enough to render you in to an epileptic fit. There's some fine shots in the production, but rarely do you get a chance to enjoy them before it cuts to another angle. If you're holding a party and enjoying the music alone, that shouldn't be a problem. If you'd like to take in the concert at a rate that isn't going to make your eyes bleed, you might want to look away.
On the subject of camera angles, there's an inventive view of Mister Bellamy's left nostril which proves quite interesting. Why the team felt the need to attach a camera to the microphone is anybody's guess, but it's an unusual shot to put it lightly.
Musically, these guys are in a league of their own when it comes to live performances. Nobody can touch Muse at this moment in time when it comes to putting on a show, and Hullabaloo captures them in their prime. It's amazing that a band who'd only recorded two studio albums at the time could put together a seventeen song set and have it sound as brilliant as this.
The band play a spectacular rendition of Citizen Erased which is for my money, one of the finest rock songs to come out of the last decade. Bellamy works his usual magic with Yorke-esque falsettoes backed up by genius work on the guitar and keyboards. Citizen Erased highlights this to the extreme, it's just a fantastic song.
Other standout tracks include the opener Dead Star, the incredible New Born, Muscle Museum and a beautiful version of much forgotten love ballad, Unintended. If you're a fan of earlier Muse albums, you'll absolutely adore Hullabaloo since it brings out the very best of the band before they escalated in to almost operatic rock.
The band do a superb job timing the set to perfection. It's nice to see the tracks from Showbiz showcased alongside the heavier OOS material. As touring for their fourth album gets underway, we can expect to see classis such as Muscle Museum and Cave only on rare occasions - both are featured on Hullabaloo and it's easy to see just what shot Muse in to being one of Europe's premier bands in the first place.
Extras wise, there's a documentary on the second disk which features strange cuttings of clips and random extracts of the band touring. If you've seen Radiohead's "Meeting People Is Easy" documentary, think something along those lines, although not quite as stylish. There is however, a hilarious clip of Dom impersonating Slipknot. Funny stuff, but lets face it, you're only going to enjoy the documentary if you're a die hard Muse fan. Several of their B sides act as a soundtrack to the visuals, and it provides a nice insight in to touring with the guys. But it's not worth the price of the DVD alone. If you're buying this, it'll be for the gig itself. In that case, you won't be disappointed.
If you're a new Muse fan and your main experience of them is through listening to Absolution, i'd recommend that you purchase the Origin of Symmetry album before this. If you like what you hear, it's worth the price. I'm not too fond of Absolution personally, yet i'm a huge fan of the older material, this DVD was perfect for me.
Also, look out for Muse's new album in May 2006. Having heard a few of the proposed songs, it sounds extremely promising.
Advantages: Muse doing what they do best... on your TV screen Disadvantages: Recorded before Absolution....
...tape is pretty much what Muse had to offer during their summer appearances; grand-esque and spectacular, and like no other band on stage. I can't do mush more than to reccommend this to everyone, Muse fans or not (every Muse fan SHOULD own this though...) There are fast and hard songs, there are lighter-in-the-air moments, and there are moments where you can't help yourself but skim the stage, just to check that there are in fact just three members ...

Advantages: Excellent track list, camera work helps capture the live feel, refreshing "documentary" Disadvantages: Very few - recorded before the Absolution album, high price (£20+)
...has been to see a Muse concert will know what it's all about - crowd interaction, lightshows, giant balloons filled with ticker-tape, and most importantly incredible music. 99.9% of fans leaving a Muse concert know they have just witnessed one of the best live bands in the world today, and Hulllabaloo provides a mere taste of that.
Filmed in Paris in October 2001, Hullabaloo contains live footage of 19 of the best tracks from the Devonshire rock ... ...only way to appreciate just how good Muse are live is to go see them in the flesh, but this comes a close second. Essential to fans, a great purchase to everybody else.

Advantages: Muse playing live Disadvantages: its a DVD, just dont get the live feeling
...Anyone who has heard of muse will know what their about, they are in a league of their own. I haven’t seen muse live, because I only recently heard of them, but I imagine that actually going to a live muse gig would be far greater than any DVD. This isn’t fault of the muse DVD, it’s just that you can’t capture the essence of a live gig on a DVD; you just don’t feel the atmosphere or the feeling of your hairs on the back of your neck. Only once did ... ...disc two for 40mins.
Muse are technically very gifted and write excellent music but the best thing is the feeling and emotion you get from this band they really are something special.
I would recommend this DVD to anyone who hasn’t seen muse live and would like to see what they are like live on stage, also it is recommended to anyone who has seen them live and wants to relive their experiences. I cant remember where I got it from but I’m about ...
