Production Year: 1967 - Comedy - Director: Val Guest, John Huston, Ken Hughes, Robert Parrish, Richard Talmadge, Joseph McGrath - Original Language: English - Classification: Parental Guidance
Advantages: Outstanding cast and wonderful storyline Disadvantages: Hard to get a hold of
Murder By Death is a vastly underrated film in my opinion and one that deserves more credit. I wouldn't be surprised if people reading this had never heard of let alone seen this film. There could be many reasons for this, one of which could be the fact that it was made in 1976 (I think although it says 1979 in the category). If, however, I reel off some of the cast members you will perhaps be surprised you've never heard of it. David Niven, Dame ... ...play that a movie).
Murder By Death was written by Neil Simon. "Who?" I hear you ask. Well he is responsible for The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys, California Suite, The Out Of Towners and Biloxi Blues among others. He was also a writer for the Phil Silvers Show at one point. With credentials like that you should feel you are in for a treat and believe me, you are.
So what's the plot. Well it's a mystery/thriller/comedy (with emphasis on the comedy) ...

Advantages: Amusing characters, good settings. Disadvantages: Plot is quite silly, not many extra features on the DVD.
...Format and Price
-----------------------
This film was released in 1976, but the format I am viewing is the DVD version released in October 2007. I bought it from Amazon for the bargain price of £3.97 and it is available in other shops for a similarly low price. There are a few special features on the DVD - a conversation with the writer, Neil Simon, in which he discusses the actors, the different approaches required for writing films and plays and talks about aspects of the film itself. This is fairly interesting but nothing too exciting. There is also the theatrical trailer and filmographies for the major actors. These are not particularly useful and you could probably get more information from just looking them up on the internet.
The Film
------------
The film is a spoof of traditional whodunits which features characters based...

Advantages: Great anime and dvd full of features Disadvantages: sound only stereo
...the info on the back and slightly gothic look on the front with a picture of light holding an apple.
Dvd Menus - The two discs menus are very simple to use from episode selection to extra features.
Extra features - throughout the 2 discs there are a bundle of extra features these include, production art, clean openings and endings, trailers and some audio commentarys. Overall alot of features just for the first 8 episodes out of the full 37.
Run time and sound - Run time is about 3 hours which is good for 11.99 and sound is either english dub or the obvious choice for me japanese with english sub. But for those wanting surround sound its only 2.0 stereo.
Overall Review and Rating - So if you like stories full of murders and plot twists then death note is definitly for you. And for the first volume 8 episodes is really great cant fault the dvd....

DVD Description
Neil Simon's screenplay is a clever spoof on murder mysteries in which eccentric millionaire Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) invites the world's greatest detectives to his home and challenges them to solve the perfect murder. Among the sleuths that try to solve the case are Milo Perrier (James Coco), Sam Diamond (Peter Falk), Jessica Marbles (Elsa Lanchester), Dick and Dora Charleston (David Niven and Maggie Smith), and Sidney Wang (Peter Sellers), all of whom are easy-to-guess but altogether sharp parodies of beloved literary characters.
