them in London hunting down jewel thieves while staying at the city's most cheerfully derelict dive, The Happiness Hotel. Filled with song and dance (and swimming!) numbers, this Jim Henson-directed feature is worth seeing, if for nothing else than to see the cantankerous Charles Grodin (Beethoven) swoon over Miss Piggy. ButThe Great Muppet Caperhas a lot more going for it: cameos from John Cleese, Peter Falk, and Oscar the Grouch, among others; Miss Piggy parading down a catwalk; and Kermit the Frog on a bicycle. The Muppets are fond of breaking down that pesky fourth wall, which gives the movie some of its cleverest moments and will elicit the biggest laughs from the kids. (Kermit to Miss Piggy: "You're overacting. You're hamming it up.") By the time a framed Miss Piggy is freed and the real jewel thieves are caught, you'll forget the occasional slow spots and remember the musical numbers and the banter. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com

Advantages: Magical muppet madness! Disadvantages: Are you kidding? It's the Muppets!
OK, so here's the plot. It all starts in America - or is it Sesame Street? Kermit & Fozzie are 'twin brother' (!) reporters, and Gonzo a photographer. They manage to miss the biggest story around: right behind them, the enormous 'baseball diamond' is stolen from the English Lady Holiday. The hapless trio end up shipped off to England to find out who stole the diamond and, if possible, to get it back. Being Muppets, of course, they succeed, but not ... ...being framed for another theft. I won't spoil the fun by telling you any more, but if you're a Muppet fan you'll know what to expect. If you're new to the Muppets, think Basil Brush on steroids but funnier!
All the usual characters are here: Kermit & Fozzie, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, the Swedish Chef (& his chickens), Dr. Bunsen Honeydew & Beaker, Animal, Sam the Eagle, Rowlf, Dr. Teeth, Waldorf & Statler, the Newsreader, Gramps, Beauregard, ... more

The gags come thick and fast from start to finish - the opening sequence is hilarious. The dialogue is very witty, and is combined with some lovely sight gags. You probably won't notice any special effects until you think about it - look out for the bike sequence and Miss Piggy's water ballet in particular. The song and dance routines are brilliant too.
Just in case you don't get it - I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I wish I'd seen it at the cinema when it came out, but I'm so glad it's available on DVD.
Personally, I think it's the best Muppet movie ever. It's fast-paced, witty, and clever (and clean - no dirty jokes here). Small children will love the funny creatures and slapstick, older children & adults will appreciate the more subtle jokes. It bears watching repeatedly, as some of the jokes - sight gags in particular - are of the 'blink and you'll miss it' variety.
The whole family agreed that if we'd been watching in the cinema we would have been thrown out for laughing too loud!
I would recommend this DVD as an ideal Christmas present for anyone who enjoys - or needs - a good laugh. It's available from various on-line stores & auctions at prices from £1.99 to £14.99: I think it's priceless.

Moviegoers [again] have a team of stars on which to heap the adoration they once dumped on Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald... Whimsy well disciplined... (New York Times, )
The elegant lensing is a joy to behold, and great imagination has been exercised by tunesmith Joe Raposo... (Variety, )
