this swashbuckling sendup of Robert Louis Stevenson's immortal tale! The fun begins when young Jim Hawkins with pals Gonzo Rizzo and notorious one-legged pirate Long John Silver board a rickety ship on a quest for buried treasure. Commanded by the dashing Captain Smollet and his all Muppet crew the motley bunch sails for a remote island. There Silver and his mutinous clan of cut-throats kidnap young Jim and his treasure map! Although Smollet stages a heroic rescue he's no match for the island queen of the warthogs - none other than his scorned lost love Benjamina Gunn. Wide critical acclaim dazzling musical numbers and irreverent madcap humour make Muppet Treasure Island a richly entertaining film for all the family.

the pirate Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his takeover of a ship in order to track down buried treasure. His friend and then nemesis is earnest cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop), who teams with the captain of the ship (Kermit the Frog) and several shipmates (including Gonzo, Ratso, and Fozzie) to foil Long John's nefarious plot. An odd subplot finds Captain Kermit stopping at a desert island to find his long-lost love (Miss Piggy--who else?). The Muppets have not lost their wild sense of humour, which works on enough levels to amply entertain children and their parents in imaginative fashion.--Marshall Fine

Advantages: Fantastic for the entire family! Disadvantages: Slapstick based comedy can get a tad tirsome for older viewers towards the end.
...grin with delight whenever a muppet character is around!
This film is one that no family should miss out on. It takes Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of adventure and entwines it with classic comedy conventions to entertain and engage with a young audience, whilst also keeping adults content.
It looks like Tim Henson has done it again!
Be prepared to sing along because....."we've got cabin fever!!!" more
This is one of those films that defines the genre 'family film,' with its almost-slapstick choreography guaranteed to make the kids laugh, and the witty remarks to make the adults smile (although whether its what Kermit says or the fact its Kermit who says it that makes one chuckle is yet to be decided!) If you've watched 'A Muppet's Christmas Carol' and found it charmingly funny, you'll find this swashbuckling adventure is definatley to your taste.
Me and my family were having a good time watching 'Muppet Treasure Island,' but it occurred to me that the magic of this film isn't only the audience's pleasure. The cast's obvious enjoyment at being part of the film, especially Tim Curry who seems to grin with delight whenever a muppet character is around!

Review
"...Curry makes a fine, flashy Long John Silver....A hoot..." -- Rating: B+ (Entertainment Weekly, p.55, 22/03/1996)
"...A wonderful picture for children, a work of considerable artistry and craftsmanship that ought to please many adults as well..." (Los Angeles Times, p.F12, 16/02/1996)
"...A fairly sophisticated affair, allowing the vivid charm of the original to work on its own level as well as providing fodder for parody, slapstick and the vaudeville revue formula of the Muppets' television shows..." (Sight and Sound, p.47-8, 01/06/1996)
"...Kermit looks quite dashing in his captain's uniform, and Miss Piggy gives Dorothy Lamour a run for her sarong as a jungle goddess worshipped by wild boars..." -- 3 out of 4 stars (USA Today, p.4D, 16/02/1996)
"...Pure delight, and constantly inventive and engaging..." (Variety, 19/02/1996)
