Sunday afternoon weather outside is terrible and I am getting over a bad cold so I decided to watch Munich the dvd. I had high hopes for this DVD prior to viewing having read a book about the Munich massacre and seen the excellent documentary One Day in September 1999. However I was very disappointed by the film, which tells of the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes in the Olympic games in Munich in 1972, which is the factual part of the film and The Israel government's response to the massacre, which is considered to be part fiction/part fact. The actual fact of the kidnap and massacre of the athletes is told in various flashbacks throughout the film, which I thought was a major fault of the film. The kidnapping and massacre of the athletes should have been shown at the start of the film as anyone unfamiliar with the story of the massacre of the athletes would not have understood Israel's response to the massacre shown in the film when they only get flashbacks throughout the film. Also I think it was a total disgrace in the film when the final horrific scenes of the aborted rescue at Furstenfeldbruck airbase which led to the death of the athletes were shown as part of eric bana' s character avner remembering the scenes in a flashback whilst making love to his wife. These Scenes were an insult on the athletes who died. Spielberg has attempted to try and be politically correct which he achieves and he does manage to convey the point that terrorism and killings just leads to more terrorism and more killings and even more dangerous people to replace those who have been killed. But for me at nearly two half hours long this film left with a bitter taste in my mind the acting is average with Bana being particularly awful and unconvincing and the more fiction based storyline being very disappointing. If you want to know about the Munich massacre watch the excellent documentary One Day in September (1999 ) and stay clear off this rubbish.
