Just out of Hibernation, what did I miss? 3 reviews done and a list as big as my arm of ones to come! I will read and rate as many as I can as I ease myself back into Ciao life.

Last weekend I was invited to go to a new Warner Bros. Cinema not too far from where I live. So I thought, yeah Ok and agreed. Then I was told that we were going to watch The Mummy Returns. Now don’t get me wrong I like some elements of Indiana Jones and his adventures, but to me this film held no interest. I thought of not going, nah that would be lame, how about convincing everyone to watch something else?
So there I am in my very nice and comfortable blue chair with plenty of legroom. I was really impressed by the Warner Bros. cinema and will go there again, oh yeah, back to the film.
Then I decided I may as well let go and try to enjoy the film, and my word I enjoyed the film!!!
Now I feel a little stupid, for judging a film I knew nothing about, hence this op, my view of a film I had no interest in and now wouldn’t mind seeing again!
I never watched The Mummy and never really felt I was missing out on much there, having read a few reviews on it saying how bad it was. Well the first thing I need to say is that it doesn’t matter
at all if you have seen the first film at all. I assume it would allow you to get a few of the references to the first film, but I pretty much figured out what they were on about really easily.
If you are a big fan of history and Egyptian myth and all of that gubbins then I would say don’t expect this film to adhere to what you already know. If you want this film to teach you something about ancient Egypt and you won’t be satisfied unless it is realistic, I would say LIGHTEN UP!! If you want a true story go and get a documentary, if you want to watch an enjoyable film, watch The Mummy Returns.
So the film makes up a few (or maybe a lot) of the legends and some of the characters are a tad unrealistic? What does that matter, this is a Blockbuster movie and I for one am glad that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. This film is action, adventure, comedy, romance, horror and more besides.
I have heard some people complain that the plot is poor and that you could drive a bus through the gaps in it. To be honest I didn’t sit there and ponder on the plot, I enjoyed the film for what it is, entertainment.
>>>>>>The plot
I know I don’t give a lot away below, but it is hard to explain the plot, it makes a lot more sense if you watch it, then the complicated plot fits into place easily, honest. But here are a few of the main points.
The year is 1933, a mere 10 years after the first adventure. The Main characters, Rick O’connell and Evelyn are now married with an 8 year old son, Alex and are settled in London.
When Alex tries on a nice golden bracelet things take a turn for the worst. The Scorpion King who’s (story is explained at the beginning of the film) will return with his army of monster to destroy the world. Not only that but the Original Mummy from the first film, Imhotep is resurrected and kidnaps Alex who is now the only one who can find the Scorpion King.
Can the O’connells rescue their son, stop Imhotep, again, and save the world from The Scorpion King, brace your selves!
>>>>>>Characters
Brendan Fraser Rick O'Connell Rachel Weisz Evelyn 'Evie' O'Connell/Nefertiri John Hannah Jonathan Carnahan Arnold Vosloo Imhotep Oded Fehr Ardeth Bey Patricia Velazquez Anck-su-namun Freddie Boath Alex O'Connell Alun Armstrong Curator (No not the Ipswich Town Striker!!) Dwayne Johnson The Scorpion King (Yes The Rock from WWF!!)
>>>>>>Summary
Ardeth Bay: Don't you see? By putting on the Bracelet, your son has started a chain reaction that will awaken the Scorpion King and bring about the end of the world.
Rick O'Connell: [To Ardeth] You, lighten up. [To Alex] You, big trouble. [To Jonathan] You, get in the car.
Brendan Fraser is fantastic as Rick, and comes out with some really entertaining one liners. The film moves at a very fast tempo with something new unfolding all the time. I found that I was laughing quite a lot, just from Rick’s attitude and the way the conducts himself even when faced with certain doom. The film has plenty of action for each of the characters with some real personal grudge matches going on.
The special effects are what make this film and although in places the effects could have been better, they really are an amazing sight. If you don’t like scorpions you may find yourself closing your eyes quite a bit, as there are millions of them!
I now want to watch the original and would definitely go and watch a third one if they ever make it.
If you want to watch a film that you can just sit back and enjoy without having to ponder on what is happening, I would strongly suggest you consider The Mummy Returns. It’s blend of Action and Comedy is very entertaining and it is one of the most enjoyable films I have watched in a long time. So lighten up, have a laugh and stop thinking about the mistakes and enjoy a true HollyWood blockbuster.
Does anyone else want one of those Pigmy mummies?

I love this film, although I think that fact that I have a humungus crush on Brendan Fraser probably helps! As you say, I think you can easily watch this without having seen the first (I have!), and still enjoy it. I think it's a great fun, family film. I really enjoyed reading the review too! - LSxx

Thoroughly enjoyed both of these films, maybe it had something to do with Brendan Fraser. I'm one of those saddos that look for historic content but soon gave up on this film.Karen xxx
Advantages: brilliant acting, great special effects, tonnes of special features, cheap Disadvantages: feels as if special effects are prioty over acting, storyline wasn't as good
