Mulan is quite an unusual film for Disney to make and they do it very well. It is an enchanting story with great characters and wonderful animation.

The story is that Mulan lives in China, where as a woman, she is destined to get married and follow the traditional role. But Mulan is not a traditional kind of girl and often makes mistakes and feels she will never please her father.

After messing things up with the Matchmaker (picture a Chinese Cilla Black, LOL !), she gets upset, fearing she will never be able to bring honour to her family.

Then the Emperor's advisor announces that China has been invaded and one man from each family must join the Army. Her father had been a soldier, but is now old and too frail to fight. So Mulan cuts her hair, disguises herself as a boy and joins the Army in his place. The story follows her adventures on the battlefield and the inevitable discovery of her deception.

It is quite a serious story, but is done very well. There is one scene where a massacre takes place, but it is done very subtlely and is very under-stated, so the younger kids will not understand the full horrors implied.

There are some lovely animal characters which really make this film - Mula's black horse - Khan, a cute red dragon called Mushu who is sent to guard Mulan by the family's ancestors, and Mulan's lucky cricket, Cri-Kee.

The last few minutes of the film are very moving and you will find yourself swept up into it all.

The film is very good, especally as it is able to be watched on different levels, so the whole family can enjoy it. A real classic.
