This is my first movie opinion so be gentle!
The Story ******** Mulan tells the story of a girl who tries really hard to please her parents. It is Disney’s first Chinese related story which tells of the legend of Mushu the Dragon and Mulan. This was Disney’s 36th animated film and what a film it is! The film begins with Mulan being prepared to have a dinner with the potential in laws but as always, she messes up somehow and again disgraces the family name. Mulan always feels upset for letting her parents down time after time even though she tries so hard.
Set in China in the 5th century, the Emperor at the time calls upon one male member of each family to defend China from attack from the Huns (the badies). Unlucky for them, Mulan’s family have no sons and so her father decides that it is his duty to fight for china. Mulan protests this matter and the men are astounded at her out spoken nature and the men advise her father to “control her“ or words to that nature.
Mulan as well as everyone else, knows that her father is too old to fight and by going, it would surely mean he would die. Therefore, Mulan’s will for her father to live compels her to take his place. Unaware to anyone else, Mulan disguises herself as a young man called Ping and sneaks out in the night with her fathers sword and armour as well as her horse. She takes the scroll which is like a certificate to prove of which family she or should I now say he is from.
Mulan’s family soon discover what she has done and they are helpless to do anything for if she is found out, it will surely cost her her life. The family therefore ask the ghosts of their ancestors to protect their child. The ghosts send the great dragon to protect Mulan and bring her straight home safely but the little dragon Mushu messes things up when the dragon, before in the form of a statue crumbles. Therefore he goes as the great dragon’s replacement but instead of returning her home, he decides to turn her into a hero in order for him to get back into the ancestor’s good books.
Eddie Murphy is the voice of Mushu and certainly brings humour to the film. I will not tell any more of the story because it will spoil it but lets just say that this is a great film with a great cast, animation as well as musical score including the hit “Reflection” which is sung by Christina Aguilera. I have laughed as well as been upset by this film.
How I came to watch it ******************* I noticed that we had the Disney channel for free on the weekend and noticed that this film was being shown today at 4pm so I though “hmmm my sister wouldn’t mind seeing that” so I decided to tape it for her. Whilst having a break from reading opinions, I thought I’d turn to the channel and watch a bit for a while. The problem was that I didn’t move until the film had finished! I was truly compelled by this Disney film and hadn’t felt this way about a Disney film since the brilliant “Lion King”. This film is truly worth watching and as well as the story involved, the film also depicts the cultural differences in China to western countries such as the UK. It show the gender differences and also the gender bias between the different sexes (that’s my sociology kicking in there!). This epic movie, as well as being entertaining has a good message also and brings it to the forfront of our minds how ever subtle it may be.
I would recommend this film to anyone as I have now learnt that these films are certainly not just for the kids! The animations are amazing and the colour as well as the interpretation is ace! Watch it ASAP!!!
Advantages: Strong, thinking characters -- a spectacular role model for my daughters Disadvantages: In the end, they hint at romance. Doh!
...heck, everybody was mad because Mulan was not the Mulan they all knew and loved -- an honest to goodness, accepted military figure in chinese history and not someone who had to sneak into the army. But, after the third or fourth viewing I said, "Get over it! So what if Eddie Murphy is an ebonics-talking dragon in ancient china! It's funny!" I like Ming-Na's "Mulan" as a role model for my daughter, who always says, "Mulan saved the day again!" And ... ...would be proud to have Mulan there to save the day. Having seen this many times, there is no longer any part I don't like. I love the guys in the camp, spitting and scratching and slapping each other on the backside. Harvey Fierstien as the tough, black-eyed Yao is a major coup -- talk about irony considering his current role on Broadway as Tracy's Mom in "Hairspray". George Takei, Pat Morita, a singing Donny Osmond makes it kind of like a cheesy ...

Advantages: a laugh a minute, good talent behind the voices Disadvantages: the odd scary scene for very young children.
...But here goes!
Mulan is the only daughter of Fa Zhou, a well-known war hero in Imperial China. Her spirited personality and irreverent ways make her a misfit in her home town and she regularly gets into scrapes, disgracing her family’s name in a world where honour and dignity is everything. Mulan loves her family, and would do anything for them, but she just can’t seem to help herself.
When the Huns invade China, the Emperor decrees that one man ... ...his country, a desire that Mulan simply doesn’t understand. Her father has already done his part, and would most likely be killed if he were to go off to war. So Mulan, in her usual impetuous fashion, steals her father’s conscription notice and uniform and flies off to train for war in her father’s place, posing as his imaginary son, Ping. Her family are heartbroken; they can’t go after her as if they blew her cover, the penalty would be death.

Advantages: typical Disney Classic Disadvantages: a few scary scenes
...Chinese girl called Mulan.
Mulan has to be one of the best animated movie's ever made - and it gets better each time you watch it. As with many Disney movies there are a lot of small things thrown in here, there and everywhere, which you only notice after watching a few times. Mulan tells the story of a young girl who goes to war to spare her father. She dresses as a man, and runs off to join the army. Mulan’s ancestors are convinced that ... ...with Mulan. On the way Mulan encounters many people who will become her friends (particularly the comedy trio that she trains with), and some deadly enemies, as they fight to save the life of the Emperor and ultimately save China. Can the Captain train these "misfits" to become the best army in China? It’s a story of adventure, fun and romance, with Mulan falling for the captain of the army, but will anyone find out her secret? If they do, ...

Advantages: great story, cute characters, good for all ages Disadvantages: none
Mulan is quite an unusual film for Disney to make and they do it very well. It is an enchanting story with great characters and wonderful animation.
The story is that Mulan lives in China, where as a woman, she is destined to get married and follow the traditional role. But Mulan is not a traditional kind of girl and often makes mistakes and feels she will never please her father.
After messing things up with the Matchmaker (picture a Chinese Cilla ... ...too frail to fight. So Mulan cuts her hair, disguises herself as a boy and joins the Army in his place. The story follows her adventures on the battlefield and the inevitable discovery of her deception.
It is quite a serious story, but is done very well. There is one scene where a massacre takes place, but it is done very subtlely and is very under-stated, so the younger kids will not understand the full horrors implied.
There are some lovely animal ...

Advantages: Suitable for wide range of audiences Disadvantages: Some poor performances
...good for small children and parents alike. It is suitable for all audiences and I would definitely recommend it to others. Although, some fans of the original Mulan will possibly be disappointed others will find the more mature storyline a breath of fresh air
The animation isn't perfect and neither are the character performances but what this film lacks in some areas others make up.
A recommended buy!!!...

Advantages: Good Family film Disadvantages: Not as good as first one
...All Tho its not as good as the first one its stil worth a watch. It has some funny bits - mostly from the delightful character Mushu - and the story line is fairly interesting. It follows off almost stright after the first movie and has the same characters in it. The things it lacks is: A decent soundtrack and fighting action, its just not as complex as the first.
The basic story line is Mulan gets engaged to General Shang and in order to keep his pedistool Mushu has to split them up. Mushu has to accomplish this as they escort the emporers 3 daughters to their arranged marriages in order to stop a war. Will Mulan let them go through with it or will she keep her duty to her heart and let them marry whom they choose?
A good movie to sit the kids in front of on a rainy day....

Plot: A two thousand-year-old Chinese legend brought to life which retells the story of a young Chinese girl who defies fear and tradition to protect her family's honour.
DVD Description
An adaptation of a 2,000 year old Chinese poem in which a fiercely independent young woman (Mulan) disguises herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place in the Imperial Army's campaign against the brutal hun leader Shan-Yu. Chock full of the usual Disney delights; breathtaking animation, catchy songs, and a funny little animal (this time, a tiny guardian dragon voiced by the resilient and newly kid-friendly Eddie Murphy).
