In 1993, when I heard there was going to be a film where Robin Williams dressed up like an old woman, I classed it second-rate, and I thought, basically, that it wouldn’t be much cop! But, surprisingly enough, when I saw it, I loved it.
CAST Daniel Hillard/Mrs Doubtfire -- Robin Williams Miranda Hillard -- Sally Field Stuart Dunmeyer -- Pierce Brosnan
CERTIFICATE - PG
RUNNING TIME – 100 minutes
FILMED IN – 1993
**THE PLOT**
Well, basically there’s this cool Dad called Daniel Hillard. His three children love him, and think he’s the best Dad in the world. But, Mum, Miranda, is fed up of Dad’s antics, and because she has to work late, hate’s arriving home and having to clean up Dad’s mess, that he’s made being funny, so Mum divorces Dad.
That’s the beginning of 1993’s best comedy starring Robin Williams as the desperate Dad who will do anything to see his children – literally!
So, after his divorce, Daniel has to find a place of his own. So, he manages to find a small
flat, small being the right word, and manages to find a job as a shipper (packs packages).
But, when he’s told by his wife Miranda that he’s only allowed to see his children once a week he becomes a bit desperate to see them more often. So, when Miranda is putting an add in the paper for a nanny, he simply changes the digits she’s putting into the paper, and decides to give the job a go… as a woman.
So, with the help of his gay brother and his partner, he gets transformed into an old bat, a young bat, Barbara Streisend and … Mrs Doubtfire herself!
So, when he/she gets to the house, he puts on an Irish accent and Daniel suddenly becomes Mrs Doubtfire!
Well, at the beginning she’s a shit cook, cleaner, washer-upper, and housemaid. But, after a good few weeks Mrs Doubtfire becomes a wiz around the kitchen and the house, and in-between nattering on about Daniel/himself with Miranda, he’s either cleaning the lounge or doing the tea!
But, is Daniel’s plan of making Miranda love Daniel again over when hunk Stuart comes into the frame?
A good ending to the film ,and pretty believable, and will leave you smiling; well it did me!
**PERFROMANCES**
Robin Williams – One Hour Photo, Jumanji, Good Morning Vietnam, - played his part well as Mrs Doubtfire, and really does make you laugh. If in his other films Robin Williams annoys you, don’t let this film put you off this film. Robin Williams is his usual annoying self the first ten minutes of the film, but afterwards we see a new him.
Sally Field – Steel Magnolias, Soapdish, - played her part excellently as Miranda, and really made you laugh, and pity her. She managed to do the exact expressions and sounds that are needed for her part, and made us believe that she really didn’t know Mrs Doubtfire was her ex husband!
Pierce Brosnan, -James Bond - appears in the film halfway through, and is rarely in it. But, when he is, he sort of annoys you in a way. He acts well, but you can’t get your head around the fact his names Stuart and not James. You’re just waiting for him to say – “the names…”
Martha Wilson, - Matilda – played the youngest child, and did it very well. She managed to make you scream, laugh and pity her, and she managed to out-shine some of her older and wiser actors, which not many five year olds can do!
**MY OPINION**
I really enjoyed the film, and it’s better for adults than children. It has more of silly adult jokes, and I know I didn’t get them at a younger age, and as I get older I feel I can understand and even appreciate the film more!
The fact that Robin Williams was in the film was a bit of a put-off for me. I don’t usually like the clown he plays in most of his films and even though he is a clown in this, his character is less stupid, and he plays some serious scenes and we get to see he is a good actor.
There are a large amount of parts, which will see you laughing out loud, with a pain in your stomach. Most of it is at Mrs Doubtfire, but Miranda and even little Martha Wilson gives you a giggle here and there.
I think most people enjoy the film because it’s so light-hearted, and an easy film to watch. It’s one of those happy films that will leave you feeling spirited and really cheerful!
The good make-up was obviously a big part in the film, but even if Robin Williams had gone in as himself, it still would have been believable. This is because Robin Williams did an extremely brilliant job of fooling us, and the characters in the film, into really believing he was a sixty-year-old woman. And that wasn’t only because of the brilliant and believable make-up, but because of his performance it made you believe.
The film isn’t long-winded, and you won’t get bored halfway through – it will keep you hooked and the fact it’s lighthearted will just make it easier to watch, and the ending is a good one!
**ALL IN ALL**
All in all, Mrs Doubtfire was a good comedy, and you probably will enjoy it the third, fourth, fifth time round. With good performances and a good funny script, it’s a good film or Sunday lunch, with the cliché happy ending!

I found this really funny. I ended up watching it on the plane to and from Sri Lanka, both versions abridged and the second more so, having already previously watched it!! However, I still managed to laugh at it, especially when his rubber face gets squashed when
