In that sense then I would have to say that both are wasting their considerable acting talents on this movie. In another, it is probably only these same considerable acting talents which makes this a watchable affair. It is ultimately a very shallow affair which asks us to suspend a far too larger portion of disbelief to really work for anyone but those most willing to leave their brain on the mantelpiece before sitting down to watch. The basic plot revolves around a divorced couple and their two children. Robin Williams plays a guy who we are introduced to as being rather immature and fun loving. This is in direct comparison to his much more conservative wife Sally Field who feels that his happy-go-lucky attitude is a bad influence upon the children, and no longer able to deal with his antics, files for divorce. We jump to the final stages of this where the basic upshot of the matter is that Williams doesn't get to see his children very often - something he has a hard time dealing with. Naturally, faced with this situation the first thing you do is contact your gay make-up artist brother and ask him to transform you into a 60 year old scottish woman so that you can pose as a nanny and get the job looking after your own children. Of course this happens, but when Field starts dating a new guy - the incredibly wooden and in love with himself Pierce Brosnan - Williams can't control his jealousy and sets about trying to sabotage things...
Like I said, I am not a huge fan of this movie but I can see why it is a family favourite. Personally I found it a little hard to believe and indeed, very sad, that a father can don a little padding etc. and fool his own wife and children into thinking that he is someone else. We recognise the nanny as Williams, its impossible to see that they wouldn't. But anyway, its a comedy so we shouldn't dwell upon such things as details and believe ability should we...well apparently not according to Hollywood. As family comedies go, this is a rather good one I suppose. There are a few funny gags here, such as Williams accidentally lighting his chest on fire and putting the flames out with a pair of saucepan lids, his false teeth falling into his drink at a restaurant - the usual thing to get kids tittering, and without resorting to vulgarity and toilet humour like many of the more recent movie offerings. Like I said, both Williams and Field are wasted on a script like this, but they mae the movie. Even Pierce Brosnan doesn't come across too badly here...and from me, thats about as much of a recommendation as he is ever going to get. Its not a bad movie, its just not that brilliant either. Rent it for the kids, but get yourself something better for later when they have gone to bed - Good Will Hunting is probably the best thing Robin Williams has done recently, before decending into some really abysmal, overly-sentimental twaddle in his most recent movies, so perhaps try that.
Introduction ~ Mrs. Doubtfire is about a mother and father getting divorced, but its not quite as simple as that - they have children. The father Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is given a few hours a week to see his children by a court. For someone who has seen their children everyday since the they were born a few hours a week proves too little for Daniel. Except his ex-wife Miranda Hillard is looking for a childminder to look after the children ... ...see his children more, he'd do anything. So he dresses up as a 60 year old woman but Daniel does it well, proper, he fools everyone. After all Daniels old job was doing voiceovers for cartoons so a woman's voice shouldn't prove too difficult and his brother Frank specializes in making masks. So there you have it, a 38 year old man turns into a 60 year old woman. Just like that. Cast ~ Director Chris Columbus couldn't have found anybody better to ...

...new nanny he poses as Mrs Doubtfire, 60, worked for the Smithe family of Elbourne England, Smithe not smith dear. She seems nice and NORMAL, compared to the other responses Miranda receives from Daniel in other scary characters as a transsexual, a child-beating heavy metal groupie and others - you know. The usual responses. Mrs Doubtfire is hired and the fun begins. As it is catergorized as a child's or "family" film, I think it is much deeper. The ... ...Mrs Doubtfire accidentally setting alight her fake rubber breasts - but beyond the gags that appeal to five year olds, lies a much more adult humour. The movie is brimming with sexual innuendo with references to "power tools in the bedroom that could crack pavement" (I'm not aware of any five year olds who would understand this) and Doubtfire's "late husband" who's idea of foreplay was "Effie. Brace yourself...". It's not for those lacking intellect. ...

Well, at the beginning she’s a shit cook, cleaner, washer-upper, and housemaid. Advantages: genuine comical elements Disadvantages: somehow sad at the same time
...Robin Williams, as Mrs Doubfire, has captivated the hearts of adults and children alike. The lovable granny who does a wonderful dance scene with a hover and a broom is witness to Williams' incredible talent as a comedian. His facial expressions are suddenly those of an old woman, his movements controlled and his body language as neutral as he possibly can. I personally felt that playing such a highly comical role could be quite difficult, but Robin ... ...the old woman's role to perfection. I would genuinely recommend this movie to you in order to see Williams trudging around in the bodysuit which would open new avenues for other such movies as Big Mama. I also loved the various expressions on Sally Field's face throughout the movie. I believe that she is one actress who can certainly take close-up shots in any situation because she handles the expressions with an incredible mastery. DVD Extras include: ...

So the weekend arrives pop corn at the ready, my son has already eyed up the dvd cover and is amused to see Robin Williams (who my son had already seen in MRSDoubtfire, a movie he also loves)..Well seeing Robin Williams hanging from the front of a big Bus looking like he was in trouble, that was enough to get my son to sit down and watch the movie with me .
