I suppose this film could be shortly summarised as 'James Bond with a difference', but better. In the way 007 centres on one man, who occasionally finds a woman, this film from 2005 focuses on both the man and womans point of view, adding excitement to the action.
He is a secret assassin, but guess what! So is she! Neither know the others secret and after 5 or 6 years of being married, they are forced to attend marriage counselling, which is where the film begins. The film then looks back to how they met and shows you some of the main aspects of their lives.
Everyday marriage problems are not all what it seems with this couple. When both their respective missions cross paths, it could be disastrous for their other half, with a fight to the death their lives would never be the same again... What matters more, love of your partner, or love of your career ? ...
Mr and Mrs Smith
are a couple in love, who seem to co-operate well with each other, even though they are each keeping a massive secret from the other. The fact that the two main characters are together in real life, I think it makes it better and somehow more realistic. The casting for these roles were obviously well thought about and in my eyes, both parts could not have been cast together.
Brad Pitt plays John Smith, while Angelina Jolie takes up her role as Jane Smith. The fact is, they just work so well together it is almost realistic in fiction.
Being a man, I am not as big a Brad Pitt fan as some people out there, but I would still say, he is one of the better actors available in the film industry and plays his role very well in this hit. He is the 'cooler' of the couple, whereas she is the harder worker, and this occasionally adds likeable humourous characteristics to his role. He also does well in the fight scenes, something he is not new to, but does all the well in this film.
On the contrary to the above, I would vouch for me being one of the biggest Angelina Jolie fans around. I love her as an actress who certainly has amazing talent, so was excited to see this film when it came about. She did not let me down in being an amazing character who is very easy to love in this movie. She comes across as the sophisticated housewife, housing her deadly secret, her workplace also seems the more sophisticated of the two. Also probably the better assassin, who has 312 kills, as opposed to Pitt's vague 50 or 60.
A third big name cast into this film, is the loveable actor Vince Vaughan who, although has previously had big roles in movies, plays only a small-ish part in this particular one. He plays it well, and does have some comical moments, as you would expect from an actor of his calibre, but doesn't really have a large enough role to be noticed all that much.
Another big actor, well, big for me as a fan of The O.C. is the character played by Adam Brody (The O.C.'s Seth Cohen) who, like Vaughan, adds small aspects of likeable humour although also, does not really star in a role large enough to get him noticed as an Oscar winning performance or something of the like. Sure, it is nice to see him play a part in this film, but it would have been nicer to see more of him.
When the two are brought together towards the middle of the film, they participate in some excellent fighting scenes, which although are very entertaining to watch, does bring about my first criticism. I suppose it happens in most films, but just how many of the opposition can be killed without any sort of the main character being shot themselves? Also, if a knife is thrown into the bad guy, why does it kill them, yet when it enters Pitt, it is merely a cut to the leg!
On the upside, I would say that is about all of the bad areas of the film, as it is generally a great movie, and even the worse parts in the film are still better than the great parts in some movies. Quite simply an excellent movie that seems to have a lot of different aspects and I would say would be highly enjoyed by many, whatever your preferred film type.
