I expect there will be a few reviews coming out on this one now as it has been shown on T.V. tonight, so as always, I shall jump on that bandwagon!
Story
The story is really quite straight-forward. Marital problems have arisen for the charming young couple, John & Jane Smith (Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie), who, after the first 5 or 6 years of marriage - they are not so sure how long - they decide to take a 'marriage MOT' - well actually, they seek marriage counselling. Recalling their early days of their relationship, they realise things have changed a great deal. They seem quite distant from one another, are keeping secrets from one another, including an unusually similar secret in fact. Each works for an agency as an assassin, a fact which the other is completely unaware of, until one day their missions seem to coincide & conflict, causing them both to want to kill the person that messed up their job, not realising straight away that that person is their partner. Soon however, it becomes evident that they have realised that the other has something to hide & the battle is on to finish each other off - after all, they are now enemies, aren't they?
Acting
If I am to be brutally honest, I don't think this film really required much in the way of acting skills. Harsh as it may sound, anyone with sex appeal could have played the main roles. On the other hand, they were still played fairly well &
it is not always a bad thing that there is nothing special in terms of acting if the film is actually entertaining, which I think this film is. There is a definite chemistry between Brad & Angelina, which we now know for certain was for real! Perhaps this did give the film the extra spark, although under the circumstances I did feel it was a shame, especially for poor Jennifer (sorry, getting a bit sidetracked here).
Out of the pair, I did think Jolie was the better actor, because for me, Pitt always seems a bit bland. The film also has Vince Vaughan as John's friend & Kerry Washington as Jane's friend. They play small roles but it adds emphasis to the two sides of the marital battle. Adam Brody plays the cocky, yet stupid target they were both meant to be after in the mission that brought about their marital war. Finally there are the neighbours, who I assume are meant to be like your average suburbian families, but seem plain irritating to me. All the same, there is a very funny scene where the Smiths attend a party at their neighbour's place & Jane has a baby pushed onto her, that she stares at with horror. I've been there - it is very awkward when a baby stares at you like that (good acting, baby) & especially when you are not the baby kind, so yes I suppose some women do that. Otherwise, I think they were basically meant to make the 'ordinary' life look boring. Actually, they just seemed a bit weird.
Film qualities
To say the least, there are plenty of special effects in this film. For me, it was stunning throughout. The film is, of course, ridiculously unrealistic. As with most of these kinds of films, everyone looks perfect, irrespective of time of day or where they are. The settings are mostly quite classy, the Smiths living in a huge detached house in a smart suburb & visiting very posh places. There are some very quirky uses of technology, like Jane having a knife set hidden in a compartment that can be opened via the oven.
There are lots of explosions, fires, structural damage, car chases & gun fights, so in a way it is much like your average Bond film. There was not, however, the same level of design as goes into the kinds of situations that James Bond would get into, but it was still quite exciting & the graphics were very good. The music is quite a mix, with some modern & some more traditional stuff, some quite Mediterranean. It compliments the story well, maybe even making it a little romantic (well, sort of).
Classification
The film has been rated a 15, but although I think this classification is fair, I would not recommend it for such a young audience (under 18s). This is because of the potential influences, like making violence, especially domestic violence, look cool & some rather raunchy scenes. On the other hand I suppose you could say that this is the kind of film that reminds people life does not have to end with marriage - I just wouldn't recommend this kind of life for spicing up a marriage. However, the idea that people can still be so intensely passionate about each other after marriage (preferably, of course, in a positive way) is something nice. Whether or not younger people will see this film as having a moral that people should learn to work through their problems together when the going gets tough rather than turn against each other is debateable & depends really how they see it, but it would be nice to think it does. Unfortunately, however, the way that violence is used in this film - ok it is part of their jobs & fundamental to the plot - is still blatantly designed to make it look exciting & even sexy, which in reality is not the case. If you are able to appreciate that this is just a film, fair enough, but if it is likely to be an influence in anyway, I'd suggest you avoid it. I'm sure most people over 15 can make this decision.
Conclusion
This is a fun, sexy film, with plenty of action & humour throughout. It is not particularly moving or meaningful, but definitely entertaining. I really enjoyed the film when I saw it at the cinema & still enjoyed it tonight on TV, although to be fair the effects are always a lot better on the big screen with the surround sound. When I saw this film, I had not seen anything like it before, nor have I seen anything like it since. It is like one big tango. I definitely recommend seeing this film, just as long as you know not to take it seriously!
