This is the film that sparked off all those rumours about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, were they an item were they not. The film was destined to be a hit at the box office as not only did it have two big selling stars but the press coverage it received due to the questions over their relationship helped it get even more publicity. I missed it at the cinema but rented the DVD through Amazon rentals at the weekend so here is my first ever film review.
The Plot -----------------
The film starts with John and Jane Smith (Brad and Angelina) talking to a marriage counsellor as their marriage is going through a difficult time, after 5 years they are starting to grow apart and feel they have lost the excitement in their marriage and feel they are growing apart. We then discover later in the film that in fact they have a lot of excitement in their lives as unknown to the other they are both living secret lives. We discover that both of them are assassins and they take on assignments whilst pretending to have ordinary day jobs. This all changes
when they are both assigned by their employers to take out the same target. They discover each others secret then turn on each other. The story progresses on but I wont spoil what happens.
The Cast -----------------
Brad Pitt - Cast as John Smith he does well in this role having a double life and some very slick shooting skills. There is certainly some on-screen chemistry between him and Angelina. I think he plays the character well and his acting in this film was certainly easier to watch than in Troy where I felt it was a bit stilted at times.
Angelina Jolie - Angelina plays Jane Smith, an assassin with style, class and a great deal of sexiness. There is a great contrast in her character with the dutiful wife having her husband's meal on the table and asking about his day and then going out and killing someone later in the evening. She is certainly a woman with attitude.
Vince Vaughn - He is the hit-man working for the same people as John Smith (Brad Pitt). He is a slightly bizarre character as still lives with his mother not really the kind of professional hit-man you would expect.
My Thoughts ------------------------
It is an action packed film with some great comedy moments. There are some very funny lines like when they are shooting each other and Angelina says something like "Honey are you ok" then shoots at him again. It's a fast paced film and you are just waiting to see what happens next. You know that they are really well suited as a couple but it takes them a lot of time to see this so this just results in a build-up of tension.
There is quite a bit of violence in this film. It is mainly people shooting at each other but in some of the fight scenes between Jane and John Smith they are hitting and kicking each other, there is one bit where John Smith is supposed to be kicking his wife, you don't actually see Angelina Jolie but the idea is there. I imagine many people would find that quite distasteful but it is only a short part and besides Angelina gives as good as she gets when she is shooting at Brad.
I enjoyed the film, it doesn't have the deepest of plot lines but it's an enjoyable watch. I think you need to watch the film knowing it's not a serious action film and more a light-hearted comedy all be it a slightly black comedy. So there is a bit of action, a bit of comedy, a bit of romance, Angelina for the boys and Brad for the girls, all in all a pretty good film!
Released to DVD - November 25 2005 Cost - £11.99 on Amazon Length - 115 mins Classification - 15
Extra Features ------------------------
Audio Commentary by Director (Doug Liman) and another by Producers (Lucas Foster and Akiva Goldsman) - not a huge fan of watching commentaries so didn't watch this.
Deleted Scenes - there are 3 deleted scenes. As is usually the case they don't add a lot extra to the story but still interesting to watch.
Making A Scene - I enjoyed this feature, they showed how they filmed one of the scenes. In the scene Jane Smith is escaping from the house in the car whilst John Smith is running after her carrying a gun. At one point John (Brad) trips on the fence and accidentally fires the gun, I learnt that this bit and the line he says was not actually in the script but just happened and they decided to keep it in. The feature also shows how they did some of the special effects and how they filmed it. It's an interesting feature and I would recommend watching it.
Trailers - The last two features are two trailers the Teaser Trailer and the Theatrical Trailer. They are just 2 trailers giving you a little glimpse of the film, not that interesting to watch after you have already seen the film.

I watched this after all the hype about Mr and Mrs, especially when their relationship became public. Enjoyable in a kind of "I know what's going to happen" way. x
